Cat, here is where you got me. I hate camping. With a passion. I think roughing it is a motel without room service. My poor parents tried hard. But I like my bed and my pillow and a bug free environment. Camping is so dirty and so much work. Yuck! Michelle Michelle...I totally agree! I always tell people that my idea of "roughing it" means that there's only a shower, not a bathtub in the hotel room!

Germs are the enemy! My army and I hate germs ! Good clean dirt is our friend! My husband comes from a long line of farmers.....I come from a long line of ranchers and outdoors people.....dirt washes off so its not a problem. Germs .....get boiled...bleached...scrubbed away... Our campsites are cleaned from top to bottom before we set-up and same when we get ready to leave. Area is policed with precision. Leave it in better shape than you found it. DH and I now have a trailer, but the extras still tent camp. (sleeping bags and the lot) Our trailer does have a stove but we enjoy cooking outside (camp stove & campfires) I always had a chuck-box for food and another for pots and pans. Everything was dried and put away so it was clean for the next use...coarse a rinse never hurt a thing. Everyone pitches in to make our meals and clean up after wards. Guys wash dishes same as gals....gals chop wood same as guys. Some people fish....some watch. Everyone hikes...takes pictures and enjoy the wildlife......and relax. We have a blast and have been guilty of having extra friends and family join us. (even a few newbies who haven't camped before....they love it too)( pull their weight too) I do understand your side....I have tried camping in a hotel and motel (even had room service)...while some of the beds were nice....the noise over rode any rest or relaxing.... So Michelle........we'll craft, sew, cook, scrap together.....just not camp together....LOL Hugs & Prayers Cat

Cat, it's a deal.
Hubby and The Boy go camping every month with Boy Scouts. Every time they come back, they spend hours cleaning up the tents, drying everything out, and packing it all back up again. I hear about forgetting a pillow (gasp!), a sick scout, bugs, etc that they have to deal with. No thanks. I'll deal with DD and the Disney channel. A girls' night with popcorn is way better!

Where we camp we are rarely bothered by bugs. But we have had bigger 4 legged visitors at night. Chelle will tell you when nightly calls of nature happen to you :.......LISTEN.....CRAWL....STOP.. LISTEN....PEEK OUT....LISTEN....SLOWLY STICK HEAD OUT............ QUICKLY PULL HEAD BACK.....BREATHE or maybe it was HOLD BREATH..WHILE WATCHING BEAR STROLL THROUGH CAMP.....WAIT A WHILE BECAUSE NEED WASN'T AS BAD AS FIRST THOUGHT.... THEN REPEAT ALL OF ABOVE EXCEPT THE PULL IN THE HEAD QUICKLY ....(no bears in sight).....JUMP RUN TO TRAILER.. PULLING DOOR OPEN WHILE INFORMING EVERYONE TO MOVE OUT OF HER WAY.....RATTLING 90 to NOTHING ABOUT THE BEAR WALKING THROUGH CAMP.....AND HIM TAKING HIS MERRY OWN TIME WHILE SHE NEEDED TO "GO". Believe me when she gets started she could put a auctioneer to shame. Really the telling is nothing like living the event. Cat

We have not gone camping in about 7 years. We still have the gear just not the time. We liked to camp at the beach. The best of both worlds the smell of pine trees and grass just steps away from the sand and sea! One time we stayed in a place called Oceano. It had restrooms and showers (for a fee). Thankfully no bears. I could hear the raccoons all night and so I did not even try to "go" until morning. But the real annoying problem was the train that passed every stinking 30 mins all night long !!!!! Oh course sounding the choo choo as it passed!

First time we went camping with my family (married only2months) my dad pulled over to rest at very small road side park.(area none of us had been before) There were full sized bunk beds so we were on the top bunk.....well about about 4 in the morning a train blew its horn DH sit so fast banging his head @#$%$#@!!!! by this time train roaring past..... (after initial shock) Dad was laughing so hard he was about fall out of bed.....Brother was laughing .....sister was sneakering......Mom was just plain "MAD"(another whole story) We had parked at roadside "park" within feet of train tracks.
My Dad loved telling our kids the story....the memory would send him and husband in to peels of laughter.

See, none of these stories inspire me to camp. Cat, your bear story is too funny! Here's my bear story: When we were stationed in CO, we lived on the Air Force Academy. Beautiful! But there was a bear who would roam the neighborhood nightly, just after dark. He would hit the trash cans and liked to graze under the tree where my kids ate snack. He never hit our trash cans--I guess the smell of the diapers discouraged that! One night, I had forgotten my book out under the tree. I ran out to get the book, saw the bear under the tree cleaning up after the kids. I whirled around, ran in the house and slammed the door. DH says, "Guess the bear is out there?" Yep, that book stayed out there all night! Michelle

Yes bears do love to find "little snacks". My book would have stay outside all night too even if it was the last copy ever printed and there wasn't a sign of the bear and a major thunderstorm was starting. (wind, hail, lightening, page melting rain) Besides the germ part that a very big reason we keep our camps so clean. We still keep camp as if we are sleeping in tents even if everyone is staying in the trailer. "NO" food, gum, toothpaste, soaps anything with a sweet smell (clothes with really smelly fabric softeners even) ever goes in a tent. All the food is lock in trailer or trucks....Rather have a bear in the truck than the tents...food in trailer is secured so there is know smells. Husband and I would love to camp were there is a beach and pine trees. DDs went camping in Washington state a few weeks back and had a great time. Something I think the rest of us will have to try.
