So until I find out otherwise - let's assume that the plates to start die-cutting are a part of the package!

Any possibility Spellbinders will release long plates so we can send border dies through the Calibur?

Any possibility Spellbinders will release long plates so we can send border dies through the Calibur? 8 1/2" x 11" paper has a diagonal measurement of just barely under 14 inches, so I would guess that several of the border dies would work DIAGONALLY on the paper. The "wider" borders probably would be a problem, so we'll be using the "try it and see" method, at least for a while.

I like to put the border dies/embossing folders along the edge of a sheet of paper, so diagonally wouldn't work for that.
I currently use my BSP for cutting/embossing edges, but the machine is a beast and I have to fiddle with the sandwiches I use. (I love my BSP, though!!)
Since the Calibur already accepts 8.5x11 paper, it'd be great if we could use border dies & embossing folders with it.

Meg,
I don't know why Spellbinders didn't consider this in the machines design.

Meg, I think you nailed it. You can use the Caliber to cut a border edge on anything up to 11", or most likely on borders that you "cut out" (say, for example, the SL music border.) If you want to cut an edge on a 12" paper, then drag out the SBP.

Meg, I don't know why Spellbinders didn't consider this in the machines design. I'm guessing they'll come out with an "extended platform" to accommodate other manufacturers' border dies (just as Sizzix did), even if they don't have any 12" borders (yet?) After all, they want everyone to buy the GC, since it's supposed to cut "everything"!

I found measurements for the plates, and they'll be too short to use with the QK border dies & embossing folders (along the long edge of 8.5x11" paper edge).
It's such a shame Spellbinders didn't think of this during R&D. the plates are only about HALF AN INCH too short. So close and yet so far!

I hope they'll come out with an "extended" plate...soon, soon, SOON! But, in the meantime, we can cut the narrow, two-sided borders (e.g., the "beaded" QK border). I laid one of the borders DIAGONALLY on a sheet of 8 1/2" x 11" paper, and it fit fine. However, the wider borders, or one-sided ones will be more problematic. Maybe we should start contacting SB right now, and (cough, cough) "encouraging" them to make the longer plates.

Yes, diagonal will fit and will work for those times we're going to adhere the cut somewhere. For putting borders on, well, the border, it looks like we'll have to jury-rig something or wait.
I'll be fiddling with possibilities within minutes of setting up. lol

You may get lucky and find that the Rev/Epic plates are the same thickness as the GC plates. Then you could run the QK borders through the GC with those plates. I believe the Rev, Epic and Sizzix cutting plates are all the same thickness... But I see your point. A half inch longer on the GC plates and the problem would be solved. Has anyone emailed SB about this? It may not be too late. If nothing else, it will get them thinking about replacement mats... Michelle

If they get a lot (and from this MB there would be a LOT!!!!!) of requests, it might move them along much faster! No doubt, their current focus is on getting the GC itself to market!

Ditto to the above. It really seems odd to me that their cutting plates would be this short, since Spellbinders also makes 12 inch border dies! My only thought is that they're planning on coming out with longer mats in the future (or maybe the existing longer mats for the Wizard will work in the Grand Calibur?) We can always hope.... Why is it that no one seems to make a die cut machine that will handle ALL the dies out there?? (Course the Big Shot did it, until the Grand Nesties came along!) Guess this is the way to keep us buying, like computers that are obsolete the day after you get them! Gail

I love my BS Expression. Yesterday, I pressed the button and nothing happened. I was horrified - tried again - just noise - tried again - it worked - thanks goodness. I was freaking out! I would be interested in the bigger machine, but have to wait and see if Silhouette comes out with a 12". And then make a decision of course Karen

This is definitely one thing I would not be moving around. And I would only bring it to a crop if there were others to carry it. It's HUGE! But oh, those big dies are just to die for! (Pun intended!) OK, I'm getting really excited now, since the Calibur is supposed to ship "late September", and it seems like it's "late September" to me! Can't wait to play with this machine and those big, beautiful dies! Dani, any word on the actual ship date? Gail
