recipe idea...
last year for our halloween pot-luck/party in our cul-de-sac I mad "Brains and Eyeballs"...and the kiddos LOVED it!
I used pasta that looks like a corkscrew - not rotini but a literal corkscrew like you'd open a wine bottle with. I buy mine at Trader Joe's. It's almost like a little straw that is then twisted. Anyway - I used that and made a half marinara-half alfredo sauce - so it's still red, but a bit creamier...and then I toss in mini meatballs that I bought frozen at Costco.
It's basically mac-n-cheese - but I made a HILARIOUS sign with springs and eyeballs declaring "If you dare..."
like I said - it was a HIT! and super duper easy - I kept it warm in the crock pot during the whole night! My little four year old neighbor Max {who I teased all October last year about me being witch!} asked if I was making it again this year! LOL
As for other treats - I usually make "finger cookies" - tons of recipes around. It's a sugar cookie or shortbread recipe but you roll them out to look like fingers - uneven so they have knuckles and then pop a blanched almond on top for a fingernail. They are a HOOT. Especially if you crumble up Oreos and line a pan with the "dirt" and stick the cookies coming up from the pan. Night of the living dead!
LOL

Somewhere I have a list of tactile foods for Halloween. One year for a class party, we had a bunch of food for the kids to touch. And signs for brains, eye balls, liver, etc. The kids loved it! If anyone is interested, I'll dig it up.

the Silhouette also has a 3D coffin shape. Bunco is at my house in Oct. so I'm using my goodies to make some decorations. When they are done I'll post pictures.

Chili--- your ideas are pretty scary --- my girls will LOVE it!!! Great ideas! I love Halloween, especially the costumes! This is the first year that my oldest (8 years old) wanted to be scary, so we are making a witch costume --- I love the handmade costumes best! I never had a store-bought costume when I was growing up... We had to make them or not go! And they are some of my best childhood memories! At the time NASA landed on the moon my Mom made astronaut costumes for all four of us kids. when I was in middle school she made a clown costume that none of my friends recognized me in! I had to borrow overalls, a straw hat, and a fishing pole one year to be Huck Finn... I only wish that I had the pictures to prove it all! My mom is teaching my oldest to sew while making the witch costume--- I will have to get a pic of them working on it and use the new QK release! I did a search for adult costumes and I found a jellyfish idea using a clear umbrella and bubble wrap... And since it has been raining the last year or two I thought that would be great and I can dress up with the kiddos! At least I have a month to find a clear umbrella!

OOH, Chili, your food sounds disgusting! (And I mean that as a compliment ). I've seen the brain molds before, but adding rice is just over the top... Gotta see if I can find that mold! Seester, I just made that little coffin last weekend, and it is so cute - the lid is even hinged. Cut it out of grey cardstock and aged it with some black chalk ink, with a little RIP on the top, it'll be perfect. Gonna try one of the 3-D pumpkins, too. Susan - I think brains and eyeballs will be on my menu. Sounds tasty and easy. Crockpot dishes as so great for parties. Mary Beth, please share a picture of your jellyfish costume! Thanks everyone for such good ideas! Gail

Brains and eyeballs--yum!
Gail, Mike's has the brain mold by the Wilton products. It's on an end cap here. And I've seen one at Target, too. We have a small seasonal section right when you walk in the door and it was there (with the pumpkin pie Pop Tarts!) But I liked the one from Mike's better.

The...uh...recipes look delightful! Now, if only we got more than 5 or 6 kids at our door to entertain/gross out!

When I did parties, I did the same thing for both kids for each grade. That way, I only had to do the planning one time and I got to reuse great ideas! I usually picked a theme--bats, skeletons, pumpkins, etc and make the snacks, games and craft fit that theme. In one school, we had to make the parties educational and the theme helped.
Games-- take a roll of tp and have them wrap the teacher (if willing!) in the tp like a mummy.
Take a ball of yarn and have the kids throw it back and forth, wrapping it around themselves. It looks like a big spider web. You can make it educational by having them say times tables or something like that.
One year, we took bowls of spaghetti noodles (brains), peeled grapes (eyeballs), baby carrots (finger bones), jello and rice (maggots), etc. We put them in boxes and cut a flap so that the kids were reaching into the dark. They had to guess what they were touching. This was gross!
You can make slime. There is one recipe with cornstarch that is a solid until you pick it up and then it turns to a liquid. There is another recipe that uses glue and is more like silly putty. I did this with both 3rd and 4th graders as a tie in to a science lesson.
We did a Guess Who game. The kids drew random names of famous people out of a hat. Without looking at them, they had a friend tape them to their back. They had to go around and ask questions to try to figure out who they were. This was really funny!
Pumpkin Science--will it sink or float? How many seeds? How big is it? How many ribs? How much does it weigh? We did this as labs where kids rotated between stations.
Ghosts--take a tube sock and fill it with rice and let the kids decorate it with bits of fabric, chenille stems, markers, etc. This can also be done as snommen for the winter party.
Noodle skeletons--using all different shapes of noodles, have the kids make skeletons on black construction paper. I did an example and the kids made humans, dogs, cats, etc. It was really fun.
Name that bone--I have a sheet that lists the major bones for "Mr. Bones." The kids went around for days saying my tibia hurts!
If you want me to elaborate on anything, let me know! And I know there's more.
