I understand that you can use the spellbinders dies in your big shot machine. I watched a video somewhere and they said it was necessary to use 2 of the spellbinder tan rubber embossing mats with the big shot. I have 2 black big shot embossing mats. Can I use them instead?
I don't own any spellbinders, but lately have become very interested in their new ones. I was just wondering what else I would need in order to use them.
Also is it always 2 steps...one to cut and then one to emboss?
Thanks for your help!

Rainie--first of all, welcome! I see that this is your first post. You will find tons of useful advice here. Now, having said that, I don't know quite how to answer your. I don't have a BS, but have researched them carefully. There may be one in this girl's stocking if I'm good! Spellbinders dies work the same way a QK die works--they are the same thickness. I believe the sandwich is: -Multi purpose platform with all the tabs closed -die right side up -paper right side down -cutting mat And yes, you do need to emboss in two steps. The first step is above and the second step is with a rubbery (silicone?) embossing mat. I know that Susan has a video on the blog showing how to cut QK and SB with the BS. Let me see if I can find it. I just didn't want to read and run... Michelle

I think this is the link, but I didn't watch it to be sure. My WiFi is slooooooow today. I'll try checking it later. But there are a TON of videos over on the blog. Click on the link at the top of this page (Go To Scrapy Land Blog). On the right side of the screen, scroll down a bit to get to "Video Archives." There is a list of all of Susan's video and a brief explanation of what they are about. HTH! www.ustream.tv/recorded/7077793 Michelle

Thanks for the great videos. They are a great source of info!! However I saw no mention of the big shot only quickutz machines. I was just wondering if two my big shot black embossing mats would work instead of two of the tan spellbinder mats.

I forgot to address this--aren't those black mats more of a rigid mat? I think those are to use with the embossing folders--Cuttlebug, QK, Sizzix all make them and they are all basically about the same. The folders are plastic and hinged, with a raised embossed surface on one side and a debossed surface on the other side. When you fold them together with a piece of cardstock in between and run it through the machine, you get an embossed pattern on the paper. You need the rubbery mats to emboss QK and SB dies. Both QK and SB sell them. Spellbinder's Tan Embossing Pads: (there are a few to choose from) www.scrapyland.com/category_s/121.htmQuickutz Rubber Embossing Pad: www.scrapyland.com/Quickutz_Rubber_Embossing_Pad_4x12_p/emboss-pad-1.htmIf this doesn't answer your question, ask again! I'll keep trying and I know there are some other women here with BS machines. Chime in ladies if you can help or if I'm giving wrong info! Michelle

I cut like I would any thin die and to emboss I flip back one of the tabs and place a crease pad and mat on top of the die and with cut paper and run through the Big Shot. I use the (one) crease pad and matt that Sizzix sells. hth

I meant to say I have black soft rubbery kind of mats from Sizzix to use with my big shot. It is part of their embossing system. Yes it comes with the soft mat and a black hard mat. I use it for embossing my lasting impression templates.
I have seen the crease mats, but never looked that close at them.
thanks for trying to answer my question!

I have the same thing but they are purple and that is what I use. They came with Sizzix starter embossing system. It's a rubbery mat and a hard mat. Works fine with Spellbinders.

Another new obsession! lol Thanks to both of you for helping me! You will love them! I was thrilled when I was able to figure out the right combination with my Big Shot. And Susan has done a video on the blog showing how see fills in the cuts with distress ink. They are fun to stencil too.

Welcome, Rainie, and thanks to you and Dania for this info. I'm a relative newbie with the Big Shot, and hadn't figured out to emboss yet. Thanks for answering my question before I even had a chance to ask it! Must be E.S.P. (Extra-Scrappy Perception!) LOL Gail

I am really happy to see this information again...I haven't used my BS for a while, and wouldn't have had a clue how to do this. (Maybe I'll be smart enough to WRITE IT DOWN this time, and tape it to the bottom of the BS...or some place)!
And I believe that there'll be a system for the SB Grand Calibur as well, but the tool should come with the mats and instructions. I need to go and look at the CHA video again, obviously!
