Sorry but as a fellow worker I can so relate to your work issues. One thing that helps me is I focus just on the day..tell myself, just get through this day then focus on the next. I also have something at the end to focus on as well so as not to lose my sanity during the work hours. Sounds like you have some positive things coming your way so soon that nasty work life will give you a break and you can just forget about it and live in the moment till begrudingly you have to go back. Plus extra hours means extra $..that is always a good thing. So here are some to make you feel better.

I don't blame you for ranting...and you came to the right place, with a whole lot of sympathetic listeners! I'm pretty certain that all of us have had a nearly-similar experience at one time or another. And work-related or not, I really do resent being taken advantage of. (Sorry to end with a preposition...my mother would tell me that it's grammatically incorrect! ;D) I hope that your Copics and stamps will keep you distracted...in a good way, of course!

Do you actually have the option of declining the extra days? Would this co-worker cover for you on your holidays? Depending on those answers, I may or may not decline the extra shifts, purely on principal. We teach others how to treat us--if they are taking advantage of you, say so.
But when I was in college, I worked every shift I could get and went to school full time. I didn't have the option of declining hours (money!) But I was also known to be reliable and was usually offered those extra hours first. I was tired, but appreciated it!
If you are going to work the shifts, I would ear mark a bit of the money for something fun and put the rest to good work. A bit of extra spending money makes me a happy girl! And if you are working, there's no time to shop. Win, win!

I dislike it when you are taken advantage of. I understand what you mean! I work in a small office and two people took the day off (fri) before labor day
Then my co worker decides last minute to take the day off so I'm left myself doing all their work and didn't get mine done!
Her excuse, well the boss signed her vacation slip!

Michelle-We are never required to pick up additional shifts. It's just typically the nice thing to do, especially when there are only two night shift techs that just alternate weeks. But yes, the other tech and I usually cover each other's nights given enough notice. During the summer, some of the day techs are available and home from college and they love covering night shifts. I don't mind too terribly having to work the extra time, it's just how it was approached that ticked me off! I wrote the boss already and she did apologize but still. Another positive I realized earlier-Yesterday was my one year anniversary so I will get a merit raise this week and it will be on the paycheck that all this overtime is on! Yippee! Now that I am at work, I'm a little better. I do love my job. I'm just.. you know.. moody this week. Thanks for all the encouragement!
