...or were they? Is hanging stockings part of your holiday tradition? If so, when do you hang them...early in the season or on Christmas Eve? Where are they hung? Do you hang the same stockings every year, or get new ones to match a certain decor? Are the stockings hand-made, and/or what do they look like? Do you hang stockings, even if there are no children in the home? Is there a traditional item that goes in the toe of the stocking every single year? Merry, merry Christmas, and happy stocking-hanging!

No stockings for us, now, BUT when I was little, I had my special stocking with my name written on the cuff in *GLITTER* - I adored that thing! (Was into bling at a very young age! LOL) Traditionally, it had an orange in the toe, and a Life-Savers Sweet Story Book in there as well. My Mom and Dad continued to give me the Life-Savers Book every year until they couldn't find them anymore!! Since we didn't have a fireplace, stockings were hung on the chair rail by the tree. We opened them on Christmas Eve, right before going to church. Loved the Christmas Eve service - candles everywhere, a huge tree lit up, and singing beautiful Christmas Carols. Right now, I'm at work, listening to those same carols on a CD while finishing some paperwork - such a sense of peace and beauty!! Wishing the same to all of you this Holiday season!! Gail

As a kid, our (my brothers and I) stockings were hand made and hung by the fire place. An orange was always in the toe, but usually donut holes or some other junk food was in there too. My mom still hangs them at her home, even though we are all grown and have families of our own.
Our stockings are store bought (large red furry ones) but embroidered with our names. They hang by the fire place and are opened on Christmas morning. My kids generally open the contents of their stockings first, for some odd reason. I don't put anything traditional in the toe.
Gail...I LOVED getting those Life Savers Storybooks as a kid too!! Our Wal-Mart still carries them and, in fact, that's what my daughter chose to buy for her friends at school this year! Certainly brought back memories! Love the butter rum lifesaver, but don't ever see it anymore!
Happy Christmas everyone! Pam

when we were stationed out in Adak, AK, the only option was making them, lol. I am not sure how I got the felt but the tops are cross stitched with everyone's name and little holiday things. Have had them ever since, ummm Tyler was a baby so 21 years now. Wasn't planning on putting them up this year but I think those home will be upset so I better, lol. I need 2 more but have no idea now how to make them match. I guess I better work on filling them in the next day or two, lol. Vicki ps. I remember the oranges and lifesaver boxes in my stocking growing up!

Wow!! We had oranges and lifesaver books in our stockings too!!! also mom always added walnuts (I have no idea why ) and a toothbrush!! My favorite aunt crocheted mine and my sisters stockings and Dad crocheted the rest of the kids as they were born. He has now made them for all the grand kids, only theirs are twice as big as ours. The stockings in my home are made be me and hung over the fireplace. They are made of flannel and that Minky super soft stuff and velvet. I love them!! We use the same ones every year, that is until I decide to make new ones. We open them first thing Christmas morning. Cindy

I too always had a clemintine in the toe and the Life Saver Storybooks were always part of our stocking.
I still have my stocking from when I was small, all the worn holes and tears. It is still the stocking I hang. We now have a fireplace, so they hang on Pottery Barn silver hangers. Growing up there was no fireplce, so they were just on a chair in the LR.
I make quilted stocking, so Pat's stocking is a strip quilted stocking.
Merry Christmas to you all (and to all a good night!) Karen

My mom thought i was nuts when I said the lifesavers used to have little books in them. I can't believe she doesn't remember! the Life-Savers Storybooks - OH YES - that was my favorite thing about my stocking. In there every year!! My childhood stocking still hangs at my parent's home, on their fireplace, alongside my sister's. Weird thing, mom and dad never had stockings - just the two of us. We have stockings that were bought 16 years ago, right after my son was born. My daughter had survived with a red fuzzy stocking with stick on letters for 2 years because I was SO indecisive about what I wanted our stockings to look like. LOL!!! The four we have now are needlepointed on the front with a Christmas scene and the back side is velvet. I love hanging them each year. I might have to run out to Target and see if I can find Storybooks - rumor has it that they are available there... candy-critic.blogspot.com/2010/12/life-savers-story-book.htmlThe rolls of candy are inside a cardboard box, made to look and open like a book Noelle. So your mom might be right - LOL - I don't remember books being IN the candy, they WERE the book!

That's right, Susan!! Though the flavors back then were much more exciting than what's in there now!! Pam, I loved Butter Rum, too! And Clove, "WintOgreen", "CinnOMon" and "CrystOMint" (the blue mint ones)... The names were pretty corny, but the flavors were great!! Wish they still made them! Gail

I saw those Life Saver books in Target and bought them for both kids. They love Life Savers, but thought it was weird that they came in a book!
And our stockings are a blend of styles. DH has his knitted one from childhood, complete with his name knitted into the stocking. It's long and BIG! Mine is velvet with some lace at the top that I made the first year that we were married, as I didn't take my stocking with me when I moved out. For DS, I found a classic Pooh needlepoint stocking (his nursery was classic Pooh--soft colors and prints), so I got DD a needlepoint angel stocking in a similar style. The colors are similar, so they all work together.
