We had a great time in the mountains! Mom (Cat) and I spend most days working on our pages. Our campsite wasn't our favorite place, but it was still very close to the river, so after breakfast mom and I would take two folding tables down to the river bank and we would spread out our paper, tools, and other bits. The wind wasn't a problem, but we did learn to anchor paper down with glue, scissors, etc, when we laid them down, just in case the breeze picked up a little. After a week of doing nothing but sleeping, reading, and paper crafting, I feel amazing. And for once I'm going to be done BEFORE the deadline. :-) I'm never quite happy with my pages, but I am happy with these--probably because I'm also now so relaxed. :-)
Now, getting them to the post office in a timely fashion is a whole other trick.....

Michelle, crafting in the outdoors sounds heavenly! I sometimes work at the table on our deck, but it's been so hot and humid this summer, I haven't tried it. Nothing like the sounds of nature to get the creative juices flowing - so glad you had a wonderful and relaxing time! Gail

I would love to be on our porch with my scrapbooking stuff! But it was 104 yesterday, predicted to be 105-108 through Tuesday, so I'm definitely staying near a fan! I'm sure it's not as humid as the East Coast, but we have fires all around us, and the smoke keeps drifting down our way...it was hard to even see across the street earlier this morning. And we've learned about "pyrocumulus" clouds...by afternoon there's a huge plume of smoke to the east, and it creates its own big puffy white cloud above the smoke...very dramatic-looking. At any rate, it's inside for now and into the near future! for anyone who can be enjoying a beautiful summer!

Oh, Diane, I hope you're not in any danger! Smoke and heat - yuck!! That's worse than our humidity any day!! I keep hoping that I'll get out to the deck once fall arrives! Gail

Diane, I hope the fires don't last much longer. I know how hard it is to breathe with so much smoke in the air. Just the few days; earlier in the year; we had smoke drifting in from the fires in New Mexico lots of folks had problems breathing. Add in those high temps you are having its got to be the worst. Please stay safe.
We've had high temps, but we've seen them a lot higher this time of year. So we are thankful for small blessings. Like Michelle said; it was really nice to sit by the river and work on our pages. I love the sounds of the river and the birds in the pine trees.....the ground squirrels are pretty entertaining too.
A great sight was watching Hubby catching fish from the other side of the river and how excited he would get.
One of the greatest sights for me was of a young father teaching his daughter a 12 or 14 yr to catch trout out of the river. Then later in the day he was teaching his 6 or 7 yr old daughter to fish. His patent's and pride in his girls was so heart-warming. He must have been a great teacher because both girls caught 7 or 8 each. (they was catching and releasing) Memories that they will all have forever.....I so wished they had a camera...(I offered to snap some pics)
I love the mountains!

It's amazing that we have so much smoke when the fires are probably 30 miles away, or so! The smoke is pretty much gone from our area this afternoon, but we can still see a slight cloud of smoke over the ridges. No doubt it will be back tomorrow morning. Thanks for your good thoughts! (Cat, you can send some of that wonderful mountain air this way! )

Diane, if only I could.....we been back home in Texas for a week now. Yuck! We only got to spend a week in the mountains. We were lucky this year; both of our girls and our son got to go with us. We all love spending time outdoors....we love to camp out in the mountains......Christy spent a lot time of fishing with her Dad....Michael spent time helping an older couple with their battery & converter problems their trailer was having and Michelle & I've already told you about how we spent our time...it was so relaxing. Since we all had jobs we had to get back home to...we will have to dream about the cool, fresh air until another time. Here's wishing cool fresh air your way Diane.... it can't hurt to wish you some.... Prayer's for everyone's safety. Hugs Cat

The closest that I get to crafting outside is if I open the windows in the scraproom unless I am spray painting LOL. I was able to make a quick card for Nephew this morning before I had to get out of there!! The AC in the craft room is only cooling to about 86 degrees! I just cannot stand to be in there until we get it fixed. Cindy

Cat, your story brought back fond memories of fishing with my Dad. We loved to go trout fishing in local rivers and streams. Just before the season opened, we would go "trout-scouting" together - checking out his favorite spots, stopping at a variety store for Birch Beer Soda - loved that stuff! I bet those girls will have great memories when they grow up, too!! Cindy, I hope your AC gets fixed pronto!! Guess the only thing you can say about all the hot weather everyone's been having - it's great scrapping weather (as long as the AC is on)! ;D Enjoy the rest of the weekend, everyone! Gail

Okay this is going to sound really dumb Gail.....but what is Birch Beer Soda?...... I assuming it's like Root Beer or Ginger Ale (but I get in sooo much trouble assuming) Does it taste like Root Bear or Ginger Ale? The best Root Beer I ever tasted was locally made at a restaurant in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Loved it!
Gail, I'm glad it brought back fond memories for you too. My Dad took us fishing on lakes and even to the Gulf. Growing up we would tent camp on small islands at the lakes.....we never went to the mountains until after we were all grown. Oh My Gosh; I found my home away from home. I have tons of great memories from our times spent lake camping and fishing; but we have made tons of great memories going to the mountains with our kids while they were growing up and plan to make tons more now that they are grown.
Oh Cindy, do like I do move some crafts to the kitchen table or even put a small table in front of your chair/couch where you watch TV. Yes, I scrap all over my house depending on the size of my project. (My crafts shares a room with my girls when they come home.....not counting my bathroom it's the smallest room in the house too. ) I hope you get your AC fixed soon.......wishing you some cool weather too. Gotta keep you scrapping.
Hugs Cat

Cat, great question!! I Googled Birch Beer - it's a regional thing from the Northeast, and actually is made from Birch Bark and other herbs (at least it used to be), probably all artificial flavor now!! The brand I drank was clear, but I've since seen some that is reddish-brown. It tastes a bit like Root Beer with a touch of wintergreen. If you've ever had Teaberry gum, it's a lot like that. If you like root beer, you'd probably love it. It's devilishly hard to find now, haven't had any in years, but one sip takes me right back to my childhood! Gail

Thanks Gail; I'll keep an eye out for it....I would like to try it sometime ...... some time Cracker Barrel has old sodas in their store part. I've never heard of Teaberry gum either....but I keep wintergreen life savers in my desk at work ...does that count .....Eugene hates the smell of wintergreen so I only eat them at work....which is funny because it was his Grandmother who told me to eat them for the nausea I was having while pregnant. I love wintergreen now. Cat

Hey now you are giving me memories I love birch beer soda. We use to have a birch tree up above from our house and I would break a small limb from it and chew on it. And I remember my dad would make homemade rootbeer and store it in the attic. There would be nights we would be sitting there and hear pop. Sometimes the seal would blow on the bottles. I still have the bottle capper my dad used. And Gail I have my pages done hope to mail tomorrow. I had the one done before Butch went in the hospital or I would probably still be at it. He is in rehab now and when I get home I just am tired out. Thanks for the memories ( sounds like a song)

I can't believe it--I'm actually done with my pages for this cookbook and already have an idea for the next one. Assuming it's a salads cookbook, that is. :-) I used traditional dies on the chocolate page, and I enjoyed it so much I think I'm going to do it again for salads. I love my Silhouette, but this was a nice change.
I'll get these in the mail to you in the next few days, Gail. I still have your address in my inbox, so I think I'm good to go (if I remember to take it with me to the post office--I'm planning on using one of their boxes this time I think.)

Hi, ladies!! Still waiting for some pages, but will get binding ASAP after they're all in... I know you're anxious to see the finished product - it will be the best (and most fattening!! LOL) one yet!! I received some "mystery pages" yesterday - no return address, no name on the pages or in the package. Lovely cards (Peek-a-Boo and Thank You) and stickers included for me... SUZANNE - I think this is your package, am I right??? Please help solve the mystery!! To whomever sent them - gorgeous pages, drool-worthy recipes, and many thanks for the extras!! Salads for the next one - definitely!!! Dianne and I have both already bought some paper for the books, so there's no going back now!! I'll post the sign-up once all the chocolate pages are in. Happy Scrappy Weekend everyone!!! Gail

Oh what a relief; I thought I was the only obsessed one making mental layouts and buying my paper for the salad recipe book. The other night while watching a favorite TV show I noticed Eugene standing and waving his hand in front of me.....he started laughing and asked what I was day dreaming about.....He almost fell on the floor laughing harder when I said..." my salad recipes and layouts for the next recipe scrapbook." Don't tell him but I can't even tell you waht happened on the show. I can hardly wait to start working on the....sorry Gail I'm not really trying to rush anybody. (but) You enablers have created a monster....for you newbies I was strictly a card-maker .....now I love making these pages. Hugs Cat

We did a Christmas one once, so I wondered if we should do something like that for summer next year. Or maybe recipes we like to make when we're on vacation. Maybe breads, cakes and pies for another one? Gosh, we could be scrapping these cookbooks for years to come.... If we don't wear Gail out that is! ;D
