You'd laugh, the first time I went to Walt Disney World I bought myself a Mickey Mouse cook book but when I got home to England I struggled to follow some of the recipes. I'd never heard of shortening or half and half & like Ros was struggling with USA weights & measures!! So the next time I visited Mickey I went into a bookstore and asked if they had such a thing as a cooking dictionary!! The amazing sales assistant smiled, disappeared for a few moments & came back with this: "Food Lovers Companion". www.amazon.com/New-Food-Lovers-Companion-Comprehensive/dp/0812015207/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1284620519&sr=1-1It converts imperial into metric. Converts lb's into cups & gives definitions for thousands of ingredients. Heck it even gives you assistance on how to pronounce some of the more unusual items. And just incase I get the urge to cook half way up a mountain it tells you what to adjust in a recipe when baking at high altitude!!

Jane, thanks for the tip. I put that book in my Amazon cart.
When we lived overseas, I didn't cook a lot of Korean foods, but knew quite a few people from the embassy. I've found the internet is a great resource for conversion tables.
I've given more than one "foreign" friend a set of American measuring cups and measuring spoons!

Jane you make me laugh ....
I love the American way of cooking with cups and spoons.. it's so much easier.
But I must admit the stick of butter threw me. One of my fav tv programmes is "The barefoot Contessa" Ina Garten... I want to live in her house hahahahha
Are her books any good girls?

Oh, I love the Barefoot Contessa! She is on in the afternoon here, so I seldom get to watch her. The kids only get a half hour of media time during school, and they never want to use it on her! I haven't used any of her cookbooks, but I've used several of her recipes. I made her sour cream coffee cake for the first day of school and added apples into it. Yum! If you go to foodnetwork.com, you can find a ton of her recipes there. (and lots of other great ones! I want to be one of her friends! She is always making some great meal for her friends. Mmmmmm...
