is today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here's a link to a you tube video of our kids marching in a Christmas parade earlier this month. I believe they march 76 out of 94 bands/floats etc. so they'll be on somewhere around 12:30 eastern time.

A friend of DH (who had attended/work at the parade for about 10 years) told him that the best channel on TV for watching is the Home and Garden Channel...hardly any interviews promoting new TV programs or breaking to commercials while the bands are marching by!

A friend of DH (who had attended/work at the parade for about 10 years) told him that the best channel on TV for watching is the Home and Garden Channel...hardly any interviews promoting new TV programs or breaking to commercials while the bands are marching by! We're flipping back and forth between the 3 channels that we are receiving the parade on. HGTV, ABC and a spanish channel - not sure which one. I can only TIVO it on abc because of the cable (BOO HOO) so one tv will be on that channel to record it. The kids had a party for New Years' last night but they celebrated the new year at midnight ET since they had to be up at 4am today!! lol We have heard that their commemorative pins are a hot item out there!! Each kid was given 5 pins with Tournament of Roses, Pasadena, 2011 and a rose on it and on the top of the pin Downingtown, PA with a face wearing a band hat and playing an instrument. They can trade them or do whatever they want with them. (I insisted on keeping one, that way if she does trade them all she still has one or I get to keep one). Phyllis

It was great! Thanks for sharing this with us, Phyllis! Band kids rock!
And I love how they told about the struggle that it took to get there. And how each kid did 20 hours of community service to give back to the community that supported them. (I'm a big advocate of comm service for kids. It shows that ANYONE has something to give!)

The kids really did do a lot of community service!!!! Some kids did a lot more than the required hours. It is a big thing here - the community service. Our kids here also have to finish a graduation project in order to graduate and they must come up with some type of project and it must include about 30 hours of community service. The project needs to be approved first, and then they must do all the paperwork, service hours, etc. and then they must present it written/ orally. No graduation without it.

oh Phyllis!!!!! I'm so glad the band finally made it to CA and SO FUN to see them on the parade route! I hadn't read this thread before it came on, but knew from the night before that they had made it. So my daughter had it on - and of course turned the volume up each time a band was coming on screen. As soon as they were talking about weather troubles I KNEW it was your band! HOORAY - so fun, what a thrill and WHAT drama leading up to it! WHEW, I can't imagine how crushed the kids would have been if they hadn't made it. Thank goodness... I'm sure when your daughter gets home she'll have all kinds of funs stories to tell - and hopefully lots of good pictures! THANKS for sharing your band's journey with us. While I haven't been commenting on the boards the last couple days I was keeping my fingers crossed and was SO excited to see them all in step in the parade!

Yes! You will need so share some of those great pictures!
I love that graduation requirement. What a great gift to give to the kids--to show that anyone can make a difference and that everyone has a time or talent to share.
When we lived in northern Virginia, DS went to an School of Choice. He needed 30 hours of community service, 15 hours of which could be a sport or a school club (like yearbook or drama.) At first, it sounded like a lot. But even at 11 years old, he had more than 80 hours in by the end of the year. Between scouts, altar serving and babysitting for a family in need, he reached his required times early. It really was eye opening to see what even a middle schooler was capable of accomplishing.
I know that here in our town in Massachusetts, volunteering is a requirement for graduation, but I'm not sure of the specifics. But we really try to foster a spirit of giving with the kids. I think that if everyone could give just a little, it would help the world out so much. And hopefully it gives the kids a bit of gratitude for what they have here at home!

Our local high schools have a community service requirement for graduation, also. I don't know what the current specificed number of hours is, but I know that our church was able to work with the school district, since we also have a service incentive for the youth, so that their hours could count toward both. Otherwise, there would have been far too many hours for most of the youth to accomplish simultaneously. We weren't sure that the school district would agree to our request, but surprisingly, they did!
