I don't know if any of you live in the desert - but we have a cactus here called "Queen of the Night". They are the ugliest cactus ever, they literally look dead 11.5 months of the year. However approximately ONE NIGHT every 2-3 years they bloom. It's literally a news making event here! They bloom at midnight, I guess when the moon is at it's highest?? and when the sun comes up the next morning they are in FULL GLORY! Well today was the day we saw them... this is in our next door neighbor's yard, and when I left for my walk this morning the fragrance hit me before I reached the driveway!! To give you an idea of size - this entire cactus is bigger than my Golden Retriever if he laid next to it. These particular pink blooms are the size of a saucer - they are GORGEOUS! Each flower seems to have about 2 million shades of pink in the depths of the petals. It was so funny - the entire cul-de-sac of neighbors was standing around this morning snapping pictures and just staring at this cactus! Had to share - good things ALWAYS happen on "bloom days"...and this is starting out to be a great one!!! Here's a bit more info - for those totally intrigued by these plants... www.onceinabloom.com/qa.phpHappy "Queen of the Night" day ladies...

What a cool name for a cool plant. The flowers are truly amazing. I can almost smell their fragrance now! Happy Queen of the Night Day to you, too! Gail

How beautiful! I love those pink blossoms! Thank you for having your camera handy!
It's easy to forget that there are beautiful cactus blossoms, when they're so rare. My MIL used to have an indoor cactus that bloomed about once a year. It took a LOT of attention in the meantime...and it wasn't a particularly lovely plant until the red bloom came out on it.
