;D ;D ;D ;D I have a question for all of you wonderful Diva's. It's amazing what you can learn by just asking questions!! I am going to the CK convention in Charlotte. I want to know the best way to fly with all of my basic supplies that I will need for classes. I'd like to just check my rolling tote but I'm sure it is not made to withstand the pressure of those baggage guys.... so I'm wondering what you lovely Diva's have done with traveling with your supplies. I am also going to the Valley Forge, PA convention (driving) if anyone is going to either, it would be fun to know and hopefully get to meet up. Thanks! Cindy

Cindy, could you pack your tote up and then pack the tote in a box? DH just few to London the other day with a few boxes of work stuff and they came through just fine.
As far as Valley Forge, I would love to meet up with you! But I think we are moving that week and I KNOW DH would have a cow if I headed off for PA when I should be unpacking! Not to mention, there isn't any way I would leave him alone to unpack (and put away) the household goods. Could you imagine how he would organize things? The garage would be a thing of beauty and my kitchen would be a mess!
But we need to have a Diva meet up in the DC area! We are moving to northern Virginia, so we must be somewhat close. And maybe Valley Forge next year? I love all the quilt shops in the area!

I have a carryon computer bag with wheels that I put my 12x12files with paper in and carry my dies. For the bulky stuff, I pack it in my suitcase.

I've never packed stuff for a convention, just small stuff to work at the hotel so I don't think I can be much help. Just wanted to say have a great time! Michelle, where are you all moving to in Northern VA? Cause that's where I'm from! Vicki

Vicki, I'm not sure just yet. DH will be working in Springfield, so somewhere in that area to make an easier commute. The kids are lobbying heavily to go back to Woodbridge--we moved to Boston from there 2 years ago.
We are going down there in two weeks to interview schools and to house hunt. It's such a long involved process and I need to check out both middle schools and high schools. I spent about 4 hours today downloading applications and phoning admission counselors. The schools there are so huge. It's overwhelming!

Michelle, It would be great to meet up. I must have missed that you were moving to VA. I knew that you were waiting to hear so I'm glad that we will be somewhat close. I would love to meet up once you get settled. CK last year in the fall did a Scrap & Play in Valley Forge that was a lot of fun. They thought that they would be doing it again this year. We have lived in our house for 10 years and my husband still can't put kitchen stuff in the right place after unloading the dishwasher. He likes to put everything in my "baking" drawer even though it has nothing to do with baking. Can't figure that one out!! I will have to look into the box idea. I could actually ship it ahead of time from my company and then arrange for a pick-up when I'm done. That might be a great idea. Thanks! Cindy

Cindy, it's still not official, but it looks like a done deal. I don't know that I've announced it here yet. We will move sometime in July and it will be northern VA--town is yet to be determined!
Every Christmas, we go home to Minnesota. Even before the airlines started charging for bags, I would ship boxes home rather than take them on the plane. Boots, mittens, snowpants--it was an entire suitcase just for the gear! It was just easier to mail a box. And then I ship gifts back to us--my family always buys big stuff for the kids!
Let me know if you see dates for the fall event. It would be fun to have someone to scrap with. I love your work!

Shipping is easier, its amazing what crafting items can cause trouble. D#1 will usually carry most of her craft items in a carry on. Never scissors or items that remotely meet the NO NO list, but her I-Top Tool and heat gun caused all kinds of questions.... What amazed me was anyone of us would recognize them for what they are......but these people had no idea. Eveything ended well in the end Cat

Cindy,
I am considering going to the Valley Forge convention. I live really close by and I thought I might check it out. Are you going for just one day or more? Did you sign up for any classes yet?

Michelle,
My brother-in-law and sister-in- law lived in Woodbridge for years; he's retired Army. Within the last year they moved back to Pennsylvania. I hope everything goes smoothly with the house hunting/school interviewing. I can't imagine moving as much as you do.

Thanks Phyllis! It's a pain in the you know what.
We need to do a meet up. I'm always game for a trip to Lancaster. I also quilt and love the shops in the area.

Michelle, I was just in Lancaster last week. I went to a yard sale at a scrapbook retreat house in Lititz. It was their 3rd annual and they had stuff from over 40 vendors. Some things were used but most were brand spanking new in the original packaging. Hubby was happy to take me so I could pick up some birthday gifts (gets him off the hook). I picked up a few QK dies for $2 and a Sizzix die for $5 and some others things. On the way home we stopped at one of the outlets and there was a scrapbook store in there and I picked up another QK die in there. I was soooo happy with that purchase - I got the whale, the one that is hard to find, for just $5 in a consignment bin they had in the back of the store. Wooo!! Good trip! It's so beautiful there too! It's funny to be in the lot of a large outlet mall and directly across the street they are plowing the fields with huge, beautiful horses pulling equipment, none of which has any type of engine.

If they do this next year, I'm in! Nothing like travelling 3 hours for a yard sale! But when we lived in northern Virginia before, we never took the kids to Lancaster, so it's on our ToDo list.

Hi,
I checked my rolling scrapbook tote that I bought at JoAnn's on a flight from Maine to Dallas. The bag made it through without a mark on it, though the contents of the bag was searched. TSA was less than tidy putting the contents back together, but nothing was damamged.

I fly with my scrapping supplies a lot. All I do is put the sharp items in the check in bag. I then redistribute what ever it is evenly in my carry on or my checked luggage. You don't want your check in to weigh to much. When I take my QK dies with me, TSA always pulls it out, asks what the heck is this, hits it with their magic show me it isn't a bomb stuff and I am on my way. I think most airlines charge an additional $50.00 bucks or so for a second bag, I would just redistribute and then readjust when you get to your hotel. What rolling tote do you have. It might be to big for a carry on piece of luggage, my cropper hopper one was. Besides when it was full I couldn't lift it into my car let alone over head into the silly little bins.

Resign yourself to the fact that the carry-on will be too large to go under the seat in front of you. Also...if you are carrying any small bag, that it probably won't slide under the seat if you are sitting on the aisle, because the seat in front of you is narrower and smaller. We ran into this last fall, even though DH had an "under-the-seat" bag which was specifically designed for that purpose. (It still didn't fit under the aisle seat, according to the flight attendant, as she ripped it away from DH's hands and tossed it in the overhead compartment...literally, even though our seatmate offered to put it under the window seat...GRRR!).
