for my son. He is in the hospital with confirmed pneumonia and is on IV antibiotics but there are also a bunch of other issues they are looking into. His blood pressure was through the roof when he got to the ER Sunday morning (185/115) and they were able to lower it but it keeps going back up. Today when we were there it was 175/111. They gave him a pill to bring it down but it didn't work; then they gave him a shot and it brought it down to 150/90 a little while later. Still high for a 23 year old. There are other problems as well. His potassium level was high and today he said they said his protein level and his calcium levels were high although they did say it looks as though his kidneys are functioning ok. He had been sick with a cold and the sore throat kept coming back. Also, for the last year or more has had joint/muscle issues and I believe his doctor finally diagnosed that as fibromyalgia. He came home Thursday sick and spent the whole day Friday in bed too. He felt better later Friday and not so bad Saturday. His face, arms, and legs are swollen were swollen then and are again now. Today a rheumatologist saw him and told them to stop tests related to that until the pneumonia is taken care of. I don't know what to think about the high blood pressure and the other kidney issues. They also found some fluid between his kidneys and his lungs that they want to test but he said they didn't ever do that today. We asked him to have the doctor call us directly so we can ask questions. He doesn't seem to be asking for answers as much as we want them.

Praying for the Dr.'s to find a diagnosis, for your son's to heal, and strength for your family.
The worst part is not knowing what the problem is. I hope you can speak to his Dr.'s soon.

Thank you so much for your prayers and words of encouragement. We spoke to the doctor from the hospital and the Nephrologist today. It may not be pneumonia at all but systemic inflammatory disease since he does have fluid in and around his lungs. His high blood pressure is still being treated. It was down to 150/90 after medication but then it spikes back up. He is losing protein in his urine and they want to do a kidney biopsy but must wait for the Advil/Motrin he took this weekend to be out of his system for 4-5 days first so they cannot do the biopsy until Thursday. He also keeps getting bad headaches every 4 hrs. so they did an MRI of his brain. Both the blood pressure and the headaches could be from the kidney issues. The Nephrologist said his capillaries that lead into the kidney filters could be inflamed but thankfully there is no loss of kidney function at this point and that we may have caught this early. Another theory from the Nephrologist is that it could be a renal-pulmonary syndrome since both the lungs and kidneys are affected. He is also on oxygen and the whites of his eyes are almost totally red. They are still waiting on more blood test results to return so we should have more info. in the next few days.

Phyllis, it sounds like he is slowly improving. I'm glad that his kidneys are still working. That's great news! I was thinking a lot about you yesterday. I'm still praying for more answers for you and a good resolution to this problem.
