Thanks everyone! Sorry I'm just getting back to this; it's been a bit crazy around here. Ryan was released from the hospital late Sunday afternoon (with 5 prescriptions) but they still didn't have the results from the kidney biopsy in yet. He did have an appointment to see the Nephrologist scheduled for today before he left. They put him on a low potassium, low protein, low sodium, low fat diet or as my niece joked "a water and air diet". Also he needs to have follow-up bloodwork in a week and a follow-up chest xray and maybe even a followup CAT scan of his chest in a few months.
Today's Nephrology visit went well and he was told it looks as though this was all brought on from untreated strep throat. He will still need to take the blood pressure meds, diuretic, etc. because it will take 6-8 weeks for everything to clear up. GREAT NEWS!!!! He was so scared and was convincing himself that he had permanent kidney disease that would lead to dialysis/kidney transplant in the future. I am so happy that is not the case. His diet is still restricted somewhat but he doesn't have to do the low potassium/low protein anymore. The doctor said he should be back to a normal 23yr. olds diet (Pizza is what Ryan wants the most) in a few months. He wants to check his bloodwork again in about 2weeks and have Ryan do all other follow-ups with his primary doc. Boy, what a harrowing week. I am so glad Ryan is ok. Thank you all again for your prayers and kind words.
Phyllis

All that from strep throat? Wow! I'm so glad that he is on the mend and it doesn't look like there is any permanent damage. Isn't the human body an incredible machine?

I've heard that untreated strep could lead to some funky stuff. Phyllis it sound like he will be back to his normal self. Praise God for his healing touch. Hang in there Mom, these life rollercoasters can do us in if we are not careful. Thank you for the update.

Phyllis, I happy to hear your son is doing better
Strep is nasty business, if left untreated.
Prayers that he makes a complete recovery and returns to normal soon.

I've heard that untreated strep could lead to some funky stuff. Phyllis it sound like he will be back to his normal self. [/IMG]
It is unbelieveable isn't it. He didn't even know he had strep. He had a sore throat about 2 weeks before this hospitalization. It was sore a few days and cleared up then was back again a week later for a day or so then it seemed to be gone. Then it was a week later when all this happened and he ended up in the hospital. The doctor told him if he felt a sore throat in the future to get to the doctor right away.

I didn't know they could check your blood to see if you had had strep recently either. Amazing what they can do.

Oh, Phyllis, I am so relieved to hear this news! It's wonderful to know he should make a complete recovery. Strep is one strange bug - can cause inflammation of the heart valves (rheumatic fever) or the kidneys if not treated. Thank goodness, with the proper treatment, this is reversible! Thank you SO much for taking the time to update us, I know it's been crazy for you. to you and yours! Gail
