When did you find your self wanting a new lens?
I have the kit lens, but it doesn't give me much reach (18 - 55), so i am debating if i should wait a bit more and keep practicing or go for a 75 - 300 lens?
Hugs,
Mila

I wanted a longer lens almost immediately, too. Mostly for wildlife shots, since we go camping and hiking a lot. But I've discovered that they can be a great way to catch candid shots of people at family gatherings, etc, since you can be pretty far off and zoom in tight on their faces without intruding on the moment. You can also take some great macro shots of flowers, etc.
They're a little expensive, but I would recommend getting a lens with some kind of Image Stabilization (Canon calls it that). It makes it a lot easier to work without a tripod or monopod. I'm not entirely sure, but that feature may be standard now on a lot of Canon lenses.
And since this message board is all about enabling people, I'll also recommend the Zap Shot if you want a wireless remote. Using one helps prevent camera shake, especially with long shots, but it's not absolutely necessary or anything. Just fun to have. :-) Same with the Gorillapod. It's a handy, compact way to mount a camera in just about any situation, but, again, it's not necessary. Just handy.
I have a Canon Rebel XSi, btw.
Hope you find a lens you love! Good luck with your photography!

I've wondered about the Gorillapod. Sounds like you really like yours. I'll have to take a closer look... Thanks! Gail

My sister has used hers, along with the Zap Shot, to get photos of humming birds in camp. I've wrapped my Gorillapod around railings to get low-light shots in Carlsbad Caverns (New Mexico).

Love my Gorillapod! Make sure that you get the one that is for the DSLR. Especially if you are considering a bigger lens.

Gorillapods are the greatest! I started with a small one for my point and shoot, and then got the DSLR-size when my DH gave me the camera for Christmas. I use it more than the tripod (easier to pack along, too).
I use the 50mm and the zoom lens more than the macro, which DH didn't think I'd be able to live without. ;D
And if you're using a tripod or Gorillapod, you may not need the image stabilizer engaged, since it makes a counter-move to your hand-held camera shake. Sometimes I take 2 pictures...one with it on and one with it off, just to be sure.

Yes, i am trying to convince hubster that i NEED the zoom lens like NOW. LOL I will let you know if my convincing worked by Wednesday.
We are going on vaca in a few days. If i don't get the cheaper one for $250, then i am just going to save up for the really awesome Sony G Lens that is about $800.
Hugs,
Mila

When we bought our DSLR, it arrived and my husband and I took about 5 pictures each and then looked at each other and said "more lenses now". lol so we ordered two others right away. I struggle a little with this huge camera and the bag I need close at hand with the lenses after only wanting pocket sized digital cameras that just drop in the purse or pocket. Buuuuut the payoff is so nice when I can get any shot I want. I find myself changing lenses constantly and it's fun (and admittedly, it makes me feel fancy and professional even if I'm not!!) and not as daunting as it was at first! But yes, I "needed" new lens options pretty much immediately.
Oh-mine's the Canon Rebel xsi too

When I bought my DSLR I bougt a mid (18-105 mm) size lens, but as I quickly realized I wanted a telephoto lens. So I rented one to make sure I really wanted/would use it, sure enough I did so within a few months purchased a (18mm-200mm) telephoto lens that I used for all my ds's football games. Then the more I got into phototgraphy I realized I wanted a macro lens so within a few more months went ahead and purchased one of those. I have to say I really use my telephoto lens all the time and came in very handy for our trip to Yellowstone earlier this year.
I think it's all about what you need and can use. The macro lens is more of my play around for fun lens but lately I keep thinking I would like to add a teleconverter to get more length from my zoom lens.
You might try renting a lens if you don't think you will use it that much or just want to test it out before hand.
