Up until this week the reality of the fires had not hit home for me--Texas is a mighty big state after all. The Bastrop fire you may have seen on the national news is about 100 miles from my house, has destroyed something like 1400 homes and killed at least two people. On Monday a fire started about 30 miles north of me and was driven by wind from TS Lee--we were on the dry side of the storm and got some pretty stiff winds. It is still a long way from my house but when I walked into my garage this morning to go to work, the smoke smell was so strong I got a spike of adrenaline. For an instant I was afraid something in my neighborhood had caught fire--I had not realized the wind was supposed to shift. We've had a heavy haze all day. To further drive home the reality, the brand new house my boss just moved into is only a few miles from this fire. His family doesn't even have internet/satellite, etc set up yet. And, ironically, they have no trash service yet, either. Talk about a fire hazard. Here's hoping we get some rain from TS Nate and no wind--not plausible I know, but one can hope and pray...  Our firefighters and other first responders could certainly use some prayers right now. Christy |
