would you not enter a contest if the prize wasn't something you wanted? would you be more likely to enter a contest of the prize was just a "surprise package" is it all about the prizes...or is the contest and the challenge why you'd enter??? just curious....

Well for me..sometimes it's a little of both..I think definitely the prize is the eye catcher..but there are times when you just want to challenge yourself to make something creative. I guess deep down though the prize is going to be the big motivator..nothing like being rewarded!

okay - well you're no help!!!! well, I wish I could just offer up bags of cash - that'd make it easy!!! but at least full-disclosure, you're saying. Surprise packages maybe not so much! A "bucket of product never before used, but from Susan's manufacturer samples closet" wouldn't do it? HUH??? okay - that gives me something to start on!! thanks Leslie!

For me... it's mostly the challenge. Can I do that? ok great now move on. But I have to admit a small reward is always nice! Reward can equal "Hey that was awesome! Good job!" to anything. (It's always nice to get unexpected fun and prizes!)

Yeah a bucket of money..now sign me up I think for some it's a prize in the eye of the beholder kind of thing. Some people go out and buy everything (ahem) and therefore have too much of everything already (like me ;D) Then there are others who have a budget and can't aford much so for them a prize package is just as good. KWIM? Hopefully I am just not adding more confusion.

For me I would say its 50-50. There is motivation to complete a project within the guidelines of the contest (and getting another page made). And then there is motivation from the prize. An example would be getting published. I didnt enter just to enter. I entered pages to see my layout in print (I have had 1 layout published). And then they money was icing on the cake =D Once in awhile its just about the challenge...can I actually do x,y,z.

for me its all about the challange. The prize is just icing on the cake. I love to make all kinds of stuff (and maybe show off a bit ) I would enter a contest with no prize at all if I liked the challange Cindy

I pretty much agree with the rest of y'all. The StampyLand challenges have really been motivating me to get in there and make SOMETHING, even if that card is the only thing I get done during that two weeks' time. It's very rewarding for me and then I am growing a stock of cards that I can just pull from when I need to send one, instead of scrambling aimlessly to make one ten minutes before going to the party. So, I really love the fact that challenges are issued at all! I also love when you post personalized feedback directly on my blog about a project. It gives me warm fuzzies. With that said, the prizes make the challenges that much more exciting and although a random number generator is picking the winner, I still try and do the best I can and improve each time to try and win. Having won something before, it's definitely fun! I do like knowing what the prize will be. At first, I didn't even own any good stamps, but I started buying some when I noticed the prizes may be dies sometimes and now I'm a Copic addict! Anyhow, for me I think I'm just 70% motivated by a challenge, and 30% more motivated by a great prize. Any prize is a great prize. I wouldn't personally mind surprise prizes either. Hope this was insightful at all!

Hmmmm - I would say 70/30. 70% I love a great challenge to prove to myself that I can do it. I love being a part of something where projects can be displayed and standing back and admiring other people’s great jobs and being proud because my project is right on up there alongside theirs. 30% for the prize, it's a good motivator to get people to enter into a contest. I would want to know what the prize is too, I don't much care for surprises.

I've enjoyed the SL message board challenges with the cards....(only contest / challenges I've entered in years ) I love looking at other people's projects and I like getting feedback on my project too. Love all the different ideas people come up for the very same project. So much FUN! A Prize would be fun...... but the last prize I won was a "blue ribbon" for a "prevent fires poster contest" when I was in the 3rd grade So prizes aren't a biggy for me. If it was I'd be up a creek! Susan I guess my answer would be for the fun of it and the sharing of talents....If prizes were involued it would be just a plus for the winner.....if I was the winner of a prize I didn't want I would donate it to an crafter who needed it or a scout troop, school, a woman's shelter or someplace like the McDonald's house. (there are so many places and people who can use un-wanted craft items it wouldn't go to waste around here.) Cat[/quote]

I personally just love the challenge. It makes me go out of the box. I love trying something new. I love turning my pages in and having my children look at them. They live 300 and 500 miles away so its a way of I can show them even though they are away from me I still think of them. Prizes are always fun. Even if I had the prize I would find a good home for it. Well I am marking the week off and look forward to some challenges or just getting to scrapbook. Since I only scrap at home I plan ahead when Susan does a week of challenges and hate it when the week is over. Looking forward to whatever you plan. Prize or not I will participate. So I would say 70/30 for me. Susan we will be happy what ever you plan.

LOL - guess that makes me pretty blatant huh?!?! The books I did - heck I didn't care what the publisher needed or wanted, or asked me to use - nope - just give me instructions and then send me the check! CHA-CHING! Of course I've matured a lot since those books were published - skip the check, now I'd just like the check directly deposited into my daughter's campus account! Out of state tuition is expensive you know - {wonder if Timmy needs a co-author again!?!?}

I don't enter a lot of blog giveaways for instance if it's something I already have or don't really want. I figure I'll let someone who wants it or doesn't have it have the chance. Other than that, I'd love to win anything!

Before coming to the SL MB, I never entered my work. I have enjoyed all the challenges over the past years, cards and pages!
The prize would not influence me not to enter ( ie- if I already had the prize). Mostly if there is a prize, I prefer to know what it is.

As far as being published, of course the $$ is great, and free copies of the publication, but in that case, I do it just because I love having my name out there! And Susan, I'm sure your manufacturer stash is AWESOME and I'd LOVE getting a surprise grab bag of goodies! I'm sure there's nothing less than awesome!

I do it just because I love having my name out there! really??? I've done most of my work under "aliases" or "ghost names"...hahaha. I scrap for myself - but if someone wants it - it's about what Apple peripheral I can buy or what trip can I take! Show me the money! Okay - I'm probably in the minority!!! But that's why I love hanging around right here. True, honest ladies - who like to create fun projects to capture awesome memories!!! It's why I love scrapbooking! No judgements, no ideals, no expectations!!! Just Scrapy Land, me, a bunch of awesome supplies...and the Divas!! I LOVE IT!!!

Susan - I can only imagine what out of state fees are now! I got accepted to Uni of Michigan but ended up staying in Cali and Freshman year would have been about $22,000!!! I think it would have been Jr year that I'd be declared a resident and it'd drop to about $15k.
Oy...I wish I could save up for Abby right now but with Matt's medical expenses there is no way. She is a smart cookie and will do great things (she wants to be a vet). Gotta start saving up soon!
Jan 2011 is one light at the end of the tunnel. Most of Matt's medical debt will be paid off! Woo freaking hoo! lol Then a year after that the rest will be done. I will finally be able to breath. =)

Mostly I just enter for the fun of it. It's fun to share your work and have others oooh and aaah over it. But if I were busy that week and didn't really have the time to enter, a good prize may just change my mind!

Susan, that's why I love SL MB......because it doesn't matter if you're a newbie to scrapping or a pro when you share your work you are treated as an equal. The ladies here are great about sharing information/ tips and ideas without being judgmental. (I've heard and read thats not the norm on other MB & blogs) I love it here! I know it's mushy; but I feel y'all are distant relatives/ cousins I've never met but stay in contact with and we share a love for scrapping. Cat

oh Cat - you are just the sweetest to say that!!!! I feel like I always have a big ol' group of sisters hanging around, paying attention to goofy things I say - and sharing fun tips and tricks with each other like we're a "known each other forever" sewing club!!! I just love it - no pressure, no expectations, total forgiveness {like when I don't blog for 3 straight days!!}, fun comments, great participation - and just warm fuzzies all around!!! With that being said - the DT and I are in a big weekend planning session {wish I could say it is a weekend planning RETREAT! LOL} so more details will be hatched on Monday!! FALL FRENZY - surely one to be ready for!!

I hide all my work and don't show it to anyone.... no prize is tempting enough to post my work. Jenn well shucks - then I guess I can put away the "30 minute free SL shopping spree!!" you don't show anyone your pages/projects/cards? If you think about it - we're so safe - because even though we all feel and act like friends - we're really anonymous scrappers! Right? Would you know if you saw Gail or Leslie in the grocery store?? Would you know if you sat next to me on an airplane? NOPE - I doubt it! We're totally safe - are you kidding - we're FUN and supportive!!! You should try it - you might like it!!!

Jenn, it makes me sad to see you say that. We are our own worst critics. And maybe you don't Copic and glitter up a storm, but that doesn't make your work any less valuable. If it makes you happy and makes someone else smile, who cares beyond that? Just go for it!

Oh Jenn, like Michelle it makes me sad to see you say that; especially since you are in a safe place here. ( no judgmental critics here / no right or wrongs just plain fun. ) I really really enjoy seeing other peoples work. I even love seeing a beginner's work as much as a full out pros. Beginner's bring new, fresh ideas and perspectives to a craft. We are all individuals and have different tastes, ideas, techniques, supplies and tools; but that doesn't make any one person's work/scrapping less important than the next person. Jenn, No pressure, but I would really love to see your cards and pages and I'm sure lots of the other ladies here would too! Cat
