I know this subject is on here in previous post but I still have questions. If you are storing your dies in the magpie tins, how do you know what you have? Do you use something to "show" you the shape, like a Rolodex or an inventory album or what? Do you store them alphabetically, by the qk #, by theme, or what? HELP! Like many of you, I have a collection and it's very hard to keep up with I have without a good system. I use to keep them in the binders but couldn't keep track of what I had. I currently have them in the magpie tins alphabetically but I don't like that I can't "see" the shape on the die if I'm wanting to be "creative" outside the box. Looking forward to hearing what you all have to share!

mine are my category in the magpie tins...and I so so so want to die-cut each and every 2x2 in black cardstock and put them in an album somehow or a notebook - so I can flip through it. I hate it when I finish something up - and 2 days later come across a die and think "Darn, I could have used that- forgot I had that shape!" my Magpie tins right now are by: animals {bugs} flowers {leaves/plants} people {body parts and clothing accessories} office supplies geometric shapes holidays {not Christmas} Christmas weather house & home transportation those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head... good luck reorganizing!!!

I don't use the magpie tins, but for now I do sort my dies by holiday/theme. For my 2x2s they go in a binder, the 4x4s and larger are in a baggie (I know not the most conventional method) that I keep like a file system in a basket (I am going to label the baggies on the outside so I can quickly identify the dies) and most recently I have decided to move my holiday dies with my holiday stamps in a file drawer system I already have for my stamps. I am thinking this may make the most sense for me right now.

I think, for me anyway, having shapes in a magpie would drive me bonkers! I have them in one of QKs old 3 ring binders, sorted by theme (i.e. food, plants, tags, etc). That way I can see each and every shape I have through the clear plastic pockets. I do have magpie tins too....but I keep 2x2 alphabets in them with the label of each alphabet on the outside of the tin. I was looking for more at one point, so I could get the rest of my 2x2 alphas out of 3 ring binders, but can't find them anywhere now for the life of me!! Good luck with your storage solutions!! Remember, it's all about what works for you!! Pam

I have all my two x two's in magpie tins alphabetical- I have 18 tins full and 8 tins empty. I have them all backwards in the tins. On the backs I have used black sharpie with the name of the die and the # of the die. I also have it marked 1of 2 and 2 of 2 on the backs of the double dies. I have them all typed and in the computer. I keep a current list by my dies.At some point I do plan to cut them all out in black and file in a folder for shapes but have not had time to do that yet but have done a few and this is very helpful. I wish I had by theme but started this way and don't want to resort. I can pretty much remember my dies but not the shapes.

I don't even know what a magpie tin is . . . I've been keeping my 2x2 quickutz dies in the small 3 ring binders and the 4x4 revolution dies in the red boxes. I just upgraded to an Epic 6, however, and I'm thinking about either getting one of those all in one binders, or creating one myself. Does anyone have one of these, or even seen one in person? If you get all the plastic sleeves you can keep all the sizes in one location. I am excited about getting embossing folders and some 12 inch border dies now that I have the Epic 6. Haven't taken it out of the box yet.

I did not care for the all in one binder. I had too much trouble with the storage sleeves ripping. I only have magnetic sheets in mine now and I have Diesel and Cosmopolitin stored in them. The magpie tins are 4 in long, 2 1/2 tall, 2 in wide and metal with a lid that comes off. they do stack but I purchased two of the wooden storage boxes so each of my tins have a home all there own. They fit side by side at the back of my desk against the wall. I don't know how to upload a photo to here or I would show you. They were a QK product and Lifestyle did not pick them up. I purchased from stores that were closing them out at a steal of a price. I started out with the zip around binders but my collection was to large for those. I am always redoing my room but am getting it to the place where I can find everything very easily.

Can I just start out admitting that I love these organizing threads? I use a variety of methods to store my dies and I store them by themes--Holidays, Kids, Plants/Flowers, Animals, etc. My 2x2 and 4x4 dies are in all QK binders--CC fonts in the pink binders and shapes in the blue binders. I print off a photo of the die on clear shipping labels and adhere that to the die. That way, I can open a binder and tell at a glance what I have. My CC fonts are in the QK binders on magnetic sheets cut to fit into a 5.5x8.5 sheet protector. 2x2 fonts are in these little drawers I found at The Container Store. They are similar to the mag pie tins, but longer so they store more dies in each drawer. I have a picture of each letter that I printed on the same clear labels. I have the Monogram font, country CC die sets, and all my paper doll dies in a CD binder. The CC sets are on 4x4 magnetic sheets. These had a lot of parts and I thought that the dolls and country sets were pretty specific and I would use them together. My CC nesting shapes are in QK magnetic folders. I use a Signo pen to lable the spine with what is in them. For gift sets and larger CC dies, I use 8.5x11" magnetic sheets adhered to chipboard and stored in clear tabbed envelopes. I keep those in a file box on my Expedit. I store my border dies in a chipboard box. Most are in their original packaging, but that's getting full. So I may pull them out and put them into folders. And finally, I have a big 24x30" frame hanging on the wall with a magnetic sheet in place of the glass. I hang my newer CC dies there and anything that I'm currently working with. My entire system stores in 4 Expedit cubes. I do have a sample book that I made with all my fonts, but not for the others. There are just to many!

I store my 2x2's in a 3 ring binder in the pocket sheets that Dani carries. I think one sheet holds 24 2x2 dies. I printed out a picture of each die, cut them out, and taped them on the inside of each pocket. I try to keep them organized by Holidays, Outdoors, Flowers, etc. I do have one All-In-One binder that holds my 4x4's and 4x8's. But it is quite heavy.I also have one Zip Around Binder that holds some of my 2x2 alpha's. I also store my border dies in a large art box. I did try the Magpies for my 2x2's, but I didn't like them for the very same reason you had. I am always looking for new ways to store my dies. Good luck with your storage endeavors! PS Welcome to the board! Karen

I used the magpies! Love them!! Anyways I have my dies put together in themes like Beach which has my dolphins, whales, seal, surf board, etc, and Christmas. Then I have them catalogued onto paper. Each tin's title is in a different market color. That color is then used to write the dies I have, in order, in that tin. So like one is titled SHAPES in dark pink. Each die is then listed on a 5x7 piece of heavy lined cardstock in order in that color. I also have them catalogued onto my computer under My Pictures in a QK Folder. So I can browse that to actually see them and then see what tin I need to access. I have it like this: Christmas 2x2 Candy Cane RS-0208 PINK Works great for me since I am a visual person and can browse the pictures. Helps me know exactly what die I want to use.

Thanks to all of you have responded to this huge dilemma! Do any of you have some pictures that you could post? Basketlady - I have to admit the same thing!!! I love to organize my stuff and check out how others organize, too!!! I would love to see the inside of your binders. Actos - I have thought about this method but along with the list, I would love to have pictures by the name of the die. Do you have a complete list of all the dies? Lorie Ann - This sounds great, too! Any pictures you could share?

The way I started my list of 2x2 's and others is I have kept all the cards with the photo's on them that they were packaged in. I keep these alphabatized in the small square box. Then I started typing them in the computer. The 4x4's I also kept all the cards and I listed them by the order they were produced. I have them in CD file boxes. If you go to the blog on the left hand side Susan had our photo storage ideas stored there. My borders are in plastic boxes I got at Staples. They sell them only this time of year. I have about 30 borders in each box. They stack on book shelf. Susan gave us that idea. I purchased the Wendyful book from Dani and it has all the dies in up to end of 2010.

Deborah, I'd forgotten about the storage ideas on the blog. It just shows how many different ways there are to store these things! I bumped that old thread up to the top that I referenced above. The link is below. But there are some really great threads out there with storage ideas. Search "storage" and you will come up with a ton! scrapyland.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=18&action=display&thread=7547&page=1

The 2x2 dies are in magpies sorted like Susan's.
I kept all the package inserts with the pic of the die. I have a few that came via eBay or some clearance sale and didn't have the insert, so I cut them and glued them to pieces of cardstock the same size at the inserts.
I have slightly larger pieces of cardstock separating the subjects (like index cards).
I used my Cropadile to put a hole in the corners and slipped them all through a bookring. I have a couple bookrings now. They're so easy to flip through and I can resort very easily.
I photocopied the insert for a couple dies so I could sort them in more than one category (i.e. reindeer go in Christmas and in Animals).
I use this method to index the 4x4 dies, too, though those dies are stored in photo boxes. Cookie cutter dies are in the QK magnetic folio/books. (I use those for Spellbinders, too.)
I wish I was as organized with my Sizzix dies. They're my true love and I have many hundreds of them. They're sorted by theme, but I don't have an index for them.
I realize this method works only if you kept the package inserts or are willing to do as Susan said and cut each and every die to make an index card!

I love that index card idea I also love the idea of making my own index cards! Just the time to do it I think it will be a fun project!!! I already have the font book and it is super easy to add new ones as I get them. Thanks Cindy

For my 2x2's I use a regular 3 ring binder but i get the 5 star ones that zips close so you can close it and not worry about them falling out. I use the Scrapyland pockett storage pages to hold the dies. [/quote] This is a great idea! I think I am going grab a 5 Star zipped binder for my 2x2's. I also store my 2x2's in the pocket storage pages only in a regular binder. Thanks Disneygirl2006 for the great idea!

Ok here are some pictures along with an explaination (and I even just changed my set up)... Ok here is a picture of 2 of my Magpie Tins. See how one is written in blue and the other pink? I do that so I know what each tin has as far as dies. The inside of one of my magpie tins. I seperate each die using the card it comes with. For some of my older dies I had to make some since I didn't seperate them in the beginning. I just had them all in the magpie tins. Did you notice the red tag cards? I do that to seperate subjects. So in the tin you see above I have: Ocean (whales, dolphins, sea stars, etc), Easter/Spring (bunny, basket, rainbow, shamrock, etc), Animals (owl, butterfly, fox, ladybug, etc), Food (candy, ice cream cone, strawberry, etc), Valentines Day (people, hearts, bullseye, etc), and Transportation (race cars, trains, etc). Each of those groups is seperated by a red tag card. I obviously dont have one in the front because I can tell what that group is by looking at the card. Now I did have my tins labeled onto lined cardstock. I hardly used those since I added everything to the computer. So now I have a piece of paper that goes like this: PINK SHAPES: Halloween, Fall, Christmas/Winter, Countries, Party, Plants/Flowers. I do the same for each tin. So that way when I look at my computer picture folder and I want to use lets say the snowman, I know I need to look into the pink shape tin. I use this so much I pretty much know where each die is. Let me get some screen shots of my PC to show you my set up.

Ok so I use Windows XP. I have all of my digital pictures saved under Start/My Pictures. I have folders for each child per year or event as well as other odd folders. This is what it looks like: You can see my QK Folder at the very bottom right corner. Here is a screen shot of just a little part of that folder so you can see how I set up the QK dies I own into the foler: I title it by Theme, Size, Name, and QK Reference Code. I use the Theme first so that all the dies are organized by theme in the folder and then I can refer back to my list and get out the approriate Magpie Tin. Does this explain my system?

I just go to Google (used to go to QK but can't anymore) and LSC website, search for the die, right click the picture, and save it to my QK Dies Folder.

I like your system, too, Lorie Ann, for the way you organize the image files. I have yet to organize my dies but it's well over-due! I might have to use something similar to your method when it comes to the images/computer inventory. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for ALL of your ideas! So many good ones - makes it hard to decide. I have been going over my plan in my mind, so now let's see if I can make it happen! Let the "organizational" fun begin! (That is a part that everyone else enjoys, right?) Still hoping anybody that has ideas & pictures will post. I love looking at all the ideas! For those of you that have your cc stored in the clear file folders, are you still happy with that method? I haven't completely decided on the storage for those yet. Thanks again

I have the binders for the 2x2's and the 4x8 alphas. I have a separate binder for Halloween/Fall and one for Christmas/Winter. For the others, I use "By the sea" all seashore/swimming, food, baby, preschool, camping, boys, etc.
For my 4x4 dies, I use the Atlantic CD hanging file. I have organized by exclusives, cookie cutter monograms, and group themes together. I also have the cottage kutz and delta dies organized with those.
For border dies, I have a fishing box tray which has three sections, large section for the wide dies and the smaller sections for the thinner dies.
I had a rotten experience a few months ago, someone helped themselves to my dies and didn't return them (like my coyote) So now, I have a smaller Atlantic CD hanging file that I use for the dies that I currently working on projects and one binder that holds the 2x2 dies - they go in my 14x14 business case which locks as well as my tool box! No more loaning the dies at crops!

I discovered the quickutz site has a template for storage. you type in what you have and an image comes up and you drag it on to the screen, then you can print it out. www.quickutz.com/EZ

Does anyone have trouble getting the 4x8 plates into the storage sleeves? I got the all in one sleeves that have 3 slots and I can only get a plate into the far right hand slot. I have had this problem with single 4x4 sleeves also, the plates just don't fit.
