Found my old list from QK: Alphanumeric, Animals, Arts & Crafts, Baby, basics, Beach, birthday & Party, Bugs, christmas, Communication, Easter, Fall, flowers & Garden, Food Drinks & Cooking, Halloween, Hanukkah, Home & Heritage, Kids & Toys, Love & Wedding, Military & Patriotic, Music & Entertainment, People Clothing & Fashion, Phrases, Plants Trees & Nature, Retro, School & Education, Science and Sci-FI, Sports Games & Hobbies,Spring & Summer, Symbols & Icons, Tags Frames & Nameplates, templates, Thansgiving, travel & Vacation, United States, Winter, World, St.Patrick's Day, Whenever QK Had a new release they would put the dies in these catagories. Of course some duplicate but maybe this will help some sort there dies if they want. Just thought I would share in case someone was interested.

Thank you sooooo much! I am just getting ready to start on my 2x2 dies. Trying to make that final storage decision - alphabetically, categorize them, or qk numerically - It's almost overwhelming! Trying to find the best method that takes the least amount of space that isn't expensive to keep up and .... allowing for more growth, of course! Oh... and to be able to find what I have without searching for 15 minutes before I can find the die I'm wanting to use!

I started with the categories, too (years ago), and find it easier to locate a die or two by subject. I also store both 2x2's and 4x4's under the same category, using the EZ Storage binders. I'm not thoroughly in love with the binders, but it's too late to turn back now! I have a friend who stores her dies by number, and it takes her for-EVER to find the dies she's looking for! I think I've finally persuaded her to change to the categories...I showed her that it wouldn't take that long to make the switch, if she wasn't looking at every single number on the die(s)!

Stored by number? Yep, that would make me nuts. And squash my creativity!
If you are working on categories, I suggest trying some out. Sort maybe the Christmas, Halloween, Birthday stuff and see how it's working for you.
FTR--I store those in Winter, Holidays, and Celebrations. That way it makes sense to put the snowflake dies with the Christmas stuff (Winter category), and the confetti with the birthday stuff (Celebrations category.) And in the beginning, I just didn't have enough individual holidays to make each their own category. But I do have a Love/Hearts category rather than a Valentine or Holidays category because I have lots of hearts and the Love dies. It's just what works for me!

Michelle has a great point there-if you are sorting your dies by category and wind up with some that just don't fit, or have lots of categories with only a couple dies in them, you might want to broaden the name of your categories! Like how she mentioned Hearts instead of Valentine's Day, or Winter instead of Christmas. Sometimes I get so carried away with having a category for everything that it defeats the purpose I set out for to begin with! Another way someone might like is to separate them by season, or even by month. Not everything would fit into a certain season or month, like birthdays, but there might be a couple additional categories for those types of dies. You could easily locate all that you want for Fall, such as back to school, Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc. within one section. It really depends on how many dies you have to organize as to what method is the best for you! Just thought I'd throw that method out there as well.

Ok here is a question (possible a dumb one but bear with me) Do you seperate dies from sets? like the recent wildflower set- the bird with, say "Birds", and the flowers in a different catagory?? So far I have tried to keep sets together, but then I forget what dies there are. I know the answer is "whatever works best for me" but I am just curious what you all do Cindy

I like to keep my sets together. When I purchase a set, I keep the product info handy or with that set to know what is included.

I keep/store the sets together
I have my "picture" book so I would put the pictures of the individual dies into different categories (if need be) then because I have the die names/numbers under the pictures I would know it was from a set and know where to find it

I keep my sets together, too. It would just be wrong to separate them. Wrong! But yep, sometimes I forget what is there. But usually I remember there is some bird that I want to use and that it's a CC bird. That would put it in the file box on magnetic sheets, which is where I keep most of the sets.
But I keep the Enjoy, Relax, etc sets in a magnetic binder. Mostly because I've had them for a while and that's how I started them out. But I'm always changing stuff around as my collection grows, so who knows what I may do next!

I have spent hours looking for a die I know I have and like someone said it hampers creativity. >:(I store all my alphas in alpha order, no matter what style of die they are and I label the binder with my ptouch. I use the zipp around binders. If it is a cookie cutter I cut a piece of magnetic paper to fit the pocket. I looked for days for Wildflower, which was stuffed in a binder out of alpha order. While I was searching I found 3 other alpha' I forgot about. I am embarrassed to say that I can count on one hand the apha's that I don't own. I store my shape dies by catagory. I am impressed with the lady who stores by number. I can't remember names let alone numbers. Like someone else said if it is winter related it I store it in my Christmas binder. Snowflakes say Christmas to me when you don't get snow at Christmas normally.

How did you make it? I kinda like the thought of storing by numbers because QK doesn't repeat numbers. Every time I have sorted alphabetically or even categorized and then alphabetically within, new die purchases can totally throw this system out the window! (if you are using binders and not magpies) I guess one could categorize and then sort by number?!?! I really am torn between sorting by numbers or alphabetically but either way I will probably categorize.

I store by category and the categories are alphabetical. Fonts are also stored alphabetical.
