So my girls are asking for these for Christmas this year. Does anyone know if they go on sale at any time or what doll would be comparable? Thank you

They NEVER go on sale. At least not the dolls.
Black Friday/Cyber Monday will have some killer deals on some of the accessories--up to 50% off. And if you sign up on the email list, they periodically clearance stuff out for great prices. But never the dolls. In fact, when they retire a doll, it's instantly sold out and the ebay prices are crazy.
Two years ago for Cyber Monday, I got Kit's kitchen stove for 50% off. I know I got a few outfits and something else, too. I stashed some of it away for DD's birthday, which is in April. It was a great sale!
She's 12 now and a bit old for it. I don't think she will get anything new this year, but she still does play with them a bit. She's more into organizing things and setting up little vignettes. (sp?) But they are still out in the family room downstairs, not packed away.
She was 4 when we got her first doll and I think she has 3-4 others. They are so worth the price. The quality is excellent and grandparents and aunties are more than willing to get outfits and accessories. I can't remember how old your girls are, but I do recommend the Am Girl dolls vs a knock off. They will want to comb and play with the hair and you want the good hair, not the cheap stuff. And if they do wreck the hair, Am Girl can replace it in the doll hospital. And be sure to use the included hair brush only.
And the store itself is an experience! We went to the Minneapolis store when it opened for tea with her cousin, grandma and an aunt. It really is one of my favorite memories. The store is all set up with display cases of the dolls in an activity. It's a place for little girls (and big girls!) to dream.
Maybe this is a bit more than you needed to know! But I really love the dolls and the books. We read them together and DD was reading them herself by about 3rd grade. I did pick a lot of the books up at consignment sales and used book stores. They were lots cheaper that way!

My grandaughter is now 14 but she has at least 3 dolls. I know one was Kit and another one they made to look like her. Anyway as a grandmother I loved it because you can buy PJ's to match and lots of accessories. So I let her pick 3 or 4 items and then I chose as my budget allowed. As soon as her birthday and christmas presents were opened she would dress up her doll for a photo. They will always be her keepsakes. One went to the hospital and when she came back she was perfect with a letter . So let your girls play with them because they can be fixed . her dolls went everywhere with her. She slept with Kit for years. The books are wonderful and contain lots of history from that era . They are pricey but a very great quality doll. Debortah

I agree with everything everyone else has said. We LOVE those dolls. I have never found them on sale. Sometimes you can get a small price break if you buy a bundle that they offer. My Daughter is just like Michelle's Daughter. They are worth it. She loves them. Cindy

My daughter is 11 and also into them. She has 5, I think. We have purchased one for a Christmas present, the rest have been her purchase with Christmas money, savings, deals with Grandma, etc.
Anyway, they never go on sale. Agree with Michelle that they have some great prices on Cyber Monday as well as deals throughout the year, but the dolls themselves never.
Also agree that they are worth the price. My daughter first had a knockoff and ended up selling her in a garage sale because she couldn't comb the dolls hair. That was a big thing for her...combing/styling the hair. American Girl has great hair for this (besides the Molly doll).

Craigslist has them on there all the time. I spent a good year checking for the tree house, but no luck. But I could have bought that sleigh about 20 times!

Did I mention that I have a doll myself?! Everytime my daughter and I would look through the catalog she'd ask me which doll I liked. I'd humor her and show her which one I liked. Low and behold, she told my hubby last year that she knew exactly what I wanted for Christmas and then she proceeded to hand him $40 towards it!!!! So, being the sensitive husband/dad that he is, he ordered the "perfect christmas present for mom" and we secretly put the money back in her wallet!! What a sweetie!

I wanted one growing up but I was old enough to know it was too spendy to ask for one and the doll is just the beginning!

Felicity was DD's first doll, too. But Kit is my favorite. DD wore her hair just like Kit's when she was younger and I thought the gratitude lesson that Kit taught was a good one.

Now I'm curious about what they will have to offer. Maybe DD wouldn't mind something for one more year? Otherwise, I think this is the first time EVER that I haven't bought toys for Christmas. That seems so sad!

me too Michelle, this will be the first Christmas without American Girl stuff under the tree. It is sad at how fast they grow up. Now it is all clothes and electronics- no toys. Well board games, so almost no toys. Cindy

I'm almost there with you, Michelle and Cindy!! I think this will be the last year with 'toys' and American Girl stuff under my tree, unless she continues to remain interested in AG for 'collection' purposes. Sad. Because other than AG, all she's interested in is clothing, room decor and iPod stuff. I just placed a cyber Monday order before work this morning. I didn't even have enough in my cart to take advantage of the free shipping offer last week...maybe that's the good part?! So I waited until today to see what cyber Monday deals I could take advantage of. Pam

I was bummed for the Cyber Monday deals--I stayed up until 1 am! I was so hoping some of Kit's furniture would be in the sale. There's a lot of clothes, some cute shoes and accessories for the pets. But nothing like that great deal I got on Kit's kitchen a few years ago. Well, I guess my money is going for something else. DD has crackle nail polish on her list. What the heck is that?

I did find some dolls from friends that my girls will love. Now just thinking of adding some clothes. And crackle polish is a nail polish that when put over another color cracks and the bottom color shows through. Kinda like the effect that crackle paint gives.

Ok, no offense if anyone here likes/wears that polish. I freely admit that I'm a conservative old lady. But what the heck? Suddenly black nail polish is looking good! I guess I should be grateful she doesn't want her nose pierced!
But Scrappin4five, I'm glad that you found some dolls that you are happy with. You have years of collecting ahead of you!

You ladies were so helpful before I am hoping you can help again. I am wondering if the clothes for the other dolls (like Our Generation and Best Friends Brand) will fit the American Girl dolls?

I guess I should be grateful she doesn't want her nose pierced! Hey old lady, you probably don't want to watch my recent videos where I'm sporting dark charcoal or {yesterday} pewter colored nail polish!! My daughter asked for, and got, her nose pierced on her 16th birthday - cutest thing in the world. One small diamond is all she's ever worn and it's stinkin' adorable on her! Even her grandmother likes is! LOL! Fingernail polish is so fun - and the colors that are out right now just make me smile! I don't usually wear it in the summer, but in the winter bring it on! Especially with shellac manicures now that make it last 2+ weeks. LOVE!!! I keep telling my daughter that I'm going to get my nose pierced when I turn 45 - she rolls her eyes and silently dares me! Guess she'll just have to wait and see! LOL

Yes, the Our Generation clothing will fit the American Girl Dolls. My daughter has a few outfits from Target/My Generation...she likes the clothing, but doesn't like the shoes from there. They have great accessories too (sleep over set, baking set, art set...etc.) Pam

Ladies, I'm not crazy about some of the nail polish out there and I must admit the nose piercings make my eyes water. While that being said I have seen several ladies the nail polish and or the nose piercings looked good on. I have yet to see a person with the stretched or enlarged ear lobes that I thought it looked nice on. Sorry if I'm stepping on any ones feeling, it's just my opinion. Michelle, I did find these extra piercing very handy once. There was a large gang of boys and young men in a circle. I heard someone say it was a fight. Without thinking I shoved my way through the boys. There in the center was a young man about 17 and a young man in his early 20s. The 20 something was holding a knife with about a 6" blade close to the 17 yrs old throat. The 17 yr old was try his hardest to hold it off. The knife man had a big dog leash type chain running from his left ear to his nose to his lip over to his right ear. I almost run back wards at the scene, then something took hold of me. I reach in and grabbed the chain on both sides of the nose piecing and stepped close to the knife man and told him to drop the knife or I was going to yank his chain with all my power. He turn the other boy loose, threated me, I told him to have at it because I would take him with me and I thought I'd like where I was going a lot better than where he was going. We held eye connect for a few minutes then he dropped his knife. I held on until help arrived. Then I sat down and thanked the Good Lord for being my strength and my shield. I feel that chain strung through all those large piercings saved that young boy's life........the best hand holds I have ever seen. Cat
