I have three days to work on Christmas gift albums and my Epic stopped working. I didn't force it or anything, but it is screeching and won't move the "sandwich" through correctly--it starts to pull the platform through, but not the mat. Is there anything I can do for an immediate fix?

Someone on the MB may have a suggestion, but it would probably worth a phone call (not email, or maybe do both) to Lifestyle Crafts for an immediate answer.
Of course, that would have to wait until tomorrow morning, since I'm guessing that everyone is home today, preparing the turkey!
Do you have another tool that you can use in the meantime, or maybe a friend who will let you borrow hers? I hope this works out quickly for you!

Look and see if the mat is curled and not going through the rollers. That happened to me a few times before I figured it out and it made a yucky sound. Good luck!

Hmmm... It sounds like the sandwich isn't quite right, since it is pulling the cutting platform through. Do you have the E with or without the clear shim glued to the cutting platform?
The "withouts" were sold very early on. Make sure you are using the cutting platform, NOT the embossing platform--the name is on the actual platform. That sandwich is: -cutting platform -die, cutting side up -paper, good side down -clear cutting mat
If you have a "with" Epic, that sandwich is: -cutting platform with clear shim glued to the surface -die, cutting side up -paper, good side down -flex mat (grey, looks and feels like a self healing craft mat)
Good luck! I'll check back in again in a bit to see if you have had any luck.

Thanks all for the comments. My brother opened it up and we discovered that the plastic gears have simply worn away and stopped meshing. I tried ebay and elsewhere for replacement gears--no luck. I emailed QK/LC. Very disappointed.

P.S. Mine is without a shim. If I can find replacement gears, what should I do about a shim?

Terry, I have my original Epic, which was replaced by LC because my handle started falling off shortly after I purchased it. It was hardly used, so I'm sure the gears are still good. I'll be happy to send it to you (and no, you can't pay me for it!!), and you can use it for spare parts... PM me with your address, and I'll pop it in the mail. I was saving it for spare parts myself, but sold my Epic, so no longer need it... I wasn't sure what to do with it, and would be happy to get it out of my craft closet!! Gail

Terry, I'm glad that you found a solution. Whew!
And I'm impressed that you stripped the gears! I've put that machine through the ringer and it just keeps on going. It's the machine that I use to emboss and cut fabric and felt. You must use it a TON!

It's kind of weird--they're not really stripped in the usual sense so much as they simply disintegrated into dust. But I do use it a lot

You are brave Michelle, I would be worried that it would not work the same again after I put it back together. I am of the philosophy "if it is not broke, don't fix it" Cindy

You're right, Cindy. What if I couldn't get it back together! It's one thing if it's not working, but mine is working fine. I was cutting 6 (yes SIX!) layers of felt last night with a Sizzix die. That thing is a work horse.
And on a related topic, does anyone want to come over today and help me roll hundreds of roses? I have this idea that seemed simple enough until last night. Now I'm realizing, that's a lot of roses!

you were using a Sizzix die and running 6 layers of felt through your Epic? WHOA - I don't think I'd ever try that! 6 layers of felt is THICK...I wouldn't even run that through the industrial die-cutter at my LSS I don't think. Were you drinking last night? LOL!!!!!

Maybe just a little. DH and I were doing some wine tasting of some different Rieslings. Yum! It was a Sizzix die, not a QK die. So there's more "squish." But it just sort of happened. First I cut one layer. Then I decided 2 would be much quicker. Hey if it cut 2 so well, maybe 4 would work. Ok, this stack has 5 squares left on it--I'll cut them all. Then, heck, what's one more layer? It cut BEE-U-TI-FULLY! And heck, I hate the E with a passion. If it breaks, I have the perfect excuse to upgrade to the V! (Is it bad that I was a little disappointed that it cut so nicely? And didn't break?) Although I am wondering what those gears look like! But just like the Mythbusters warning--Don't Try This At Home! I'm amazed that I didn't break anything. It would be risky to cut that much felt. Unless you are looking for an excuse to spend some cash! Bwa ha ha!

Thanks to all, especially Gail for her generous offer. However, I contacted QK and they said my machine is still under warranty (2+ years later!) so they are replacing it. What good people! Terry

Terry, what great news! I've had some problems with their CS--maybe they got the memo and are covering the problems with the Es. I'm glad it all worked out for you.

Terry, am so happy that LC made it right! Good customer service is so rare these days, but a real treasure when you find it!! I'll hand on to my old Epic, in case someone else needs some parts! Gail

I have to say the customer service was excellent! They told me to send them my old one, and they sent me a new one instantly! This one is slightly different from my old one, and it works even better. I love it!

for LC! They replaced my first (bad) Epic with the newer one, because it was in the defective group of machines. Now, while it's working fine, I hardly ever use it (love my Vagabond!). But if we're ever w/o electricity, it's nice to know that I have a backup! It's also nice to know that their CS is operating well!
