hello everyone, I'm gram. I'm new to Scrapyland, but I'm loving the projects. I found the blog when I was going crazy trying to figure out the Epic. Now I find myself reaching for it more than my Cricut. I call myself a crafter, but my husband calls me a craft collector.. I have to plead some guilt on that point. I just can't seem to pass up a good sale on paper or my favorite equipment. Our last child just moved out, so I converted a spare room to a crafts room.. Glorious!!. when I'm not making cards or scrapbooking, I teach nursing.

Welcome gram Enablers one and all. We are guilty.... hey.... hey... hey y'all I thought we suppose be collecting paper, brads and stuff. Nobody told Me we wasn't suppose to collect. That's not something else I've missed is it? Really gram I think we all collect.....especially if there is good sell; at least I know I do. My idea is you can't use it if you don't have it. Welcome and I hope you enjoy SL's message board as much as I do. These are some of the greatest people you will ever share your craft with. Hugs & Prayers Cat

Is collecting bad? No one told me that! Here's my tip--buy twice as much. That way, you can use your stash and still have that great pp or embellie on hand "just in case." Welcome to the board! Michelle

Welcome, Gram! As you can see from the above, you're not alone in being a collector! ;D My rationale is that, in the same way an artist needs a palette of colors to work with, we scrappers need a palette of papers, brads, eyelets, ribbon, dies, die cutters, flowers, glitter, punches, stamps, ink, pens, buttons, tools.... Well, you get the picture! Then, of course, we need organizers and storage for them all! ;D Looking forward to seeing you on the board. Gail

Gail, I love your reasoning! And really, this is spon on. When I work on a project, I do have tons of things laid out. I play around and move stuff from one place to another, add and subtract embellies. You NEED that stuff at home--your LSS isn't open at 11 o'clock at night, which is when I have time to play! Gee, Michelle, do you think we both work this way 'cause we quilt? I know I'm used to laying out a bunch of fabrics, and "test-driving" them next to each other... Now I do the same thing with paper and embellies! My stash of paper now takes up more space than my fabric stash...and that's really saying something! Gail

Gail, Well, that is how I design quilts, too! Sadly, (or maybe good?) my fabric stash is still waaaaay bigger than my paper stash. But I've had more years to collect fabric than I've been scrapbooking. And I've been scrapbooking for over a decade. My problem (addiction!) was the Korean markets. We lived in Seoul for 2 years and fabric was dirt cheap there. That's where it's all made. I would buy Ginny Beyer, Kaufman's, Mumm, Hoffman, etc for less than half of what it cost in the States. I came home with lots of backings, as that is where I never want to spend my money. I hand quilt and don't piece my backs since it's hard to hand quilt over the seams. And yep, I need all those fat quarters, because just like scrapping, I do my best work after everyone is in bed! Michelle

Yes, there's nothing like needing the right thread or material in the middle of the night; because you didn't have a scrap with you when brought the thread or trim. My worst night was when someone needed a semi-formal the next night for a banquet. (Sunday dresses had always be the required dress other years) I broke my last sewing machine needle around 3:00am. ( nearest store with sewing machine needles 45 miles away)and didn't open until 10:00 am...) Luckily my Mom and Dad lived 15 minutes away and understood middle of the night phone calls. (my last resort) I would have really been up a creek if I didn't have this collecting habit........had materials...threads....trims on hand because of sales. Michelle seems we all have quite a bit in common......collector.....enablers....papercrafts...... sewing ......sales....did I mention collecting Hugs & Prayers Cat PS...... Is canning in anyone else's love.

Cat, I would love to hang with you!
I live in fear of running out of sewing machine needles. I think I have about 3 pkgs in the stash yet to be opened.
Trims... I forgot to mention all the trims in the fabric market. I loved wandering the market finding all sorts of really unique trims and buttons!
I make a peach jam that's like tasting sunshine. Every year, I try something new. My mom made homemade pickles for years and last year my SIL, DD and I tried to recreate the recipe. They were very garlicky, but yummy!

I am sooo happy to listen to others that have the same habits as I do!!!
I used to work at Beverly Fabrics for 13 years and have soooo much fabric. Like Michelle, more than paper. I also Audition fabrics (and paper, embelishments, ribbons, etc) before they go into a quilt. When I buy new fabric I wash it right away so I can iron it and touch it and lay it out with the others. I go through my stash to see if any others will go with the new ones. I too work late into the night (that is when the hubby and kiddos are asleep, the house is clean and quiet). I am blessed to own a long arm quilting machine (once a business) so I machine quilt.
It takes me hours to do one layout! I have to try out so many doodads before committing to glue! Even if I have an idea in my head it still takes forever. I can never go to a scrap Crop because I would have to take too much stuff with me!
I love these hobbies!! Cindy

I worked at a JoAnn Fabrics in HS, Northwest Fabrics in college and Hancok Fabrics when we were first married. It's a great way to build your stash, as you can see when all the new fabrics and great deals come in. But, I didn't bring home much of a paycheck! Cindy, I'm jealous of your long arm machine. My sewing machine was the latest and greatest (back in 1990! ) It still works great, but it's hard to machine quilt with it. I wasn't quilting at the time, but made a lot of my own clothes, including my wedding dress and several ball gowns when we were first married. And none of you live near Boston? Really, it's a shame. We would have a grand ol' time! Michelle

I never got to work at a fabric store, but I was a regular at every store that sold fabric. I made it to every clearance any of them had. My paychecks were spent on fabrics..threads... trims and my love "BUTTONS" We even have a denim mill in our town. At one point they would let their employees buy the denim. (My brother would buy all I could use. Sadly they can no longer buy the denim) I'm jealous Michelle...my jelly and jams was just plain old fruit syrup to my Granny's sorrow. Even with her standing over me I never had a jar jell. (Believe me I tried and tried)(jellies, jams and my pie crust were complete failures) (have finally mastered pie crusts since I've aged) I have several of Granny's pickle recipes I'm willing to share. She could can & cook anything... she could sew anything she seen.....even made quilts. She grow a garden or trees anywhere she went. (the day she passed away she had planted onion bulbs in her "flower" beds and laid down to rest and passed in her sleep. Happy) Michelle I would love hanging out with you crafting....sewing...canning...visiting.....Cindy you could help us with our " creations" the more the merrier.....maybe we could talk a few more ladies into enabling..collecting ...creating visits. Oh the fun and mischief we could get into if we lived within visiting distance (hollering distance here in Texas ). hugs & prayers cat

Can I put in a request with the Air Force to next send us to where a Diva lives? Cat, at least you succeeded with your pie crust. I finally found a recipe that works--Betty Crocker's premade crust. They sell it by the thwack bread. I just don't make enough crust to get the hang of it! Your granny sounds wonderful. Both my grandmothers sewed/cooked and so did my mother. My MIL has just started slowing down on cooking, since it's just the two of them. But my grandmother still cooks for a crowd and they show up eventually! When I'm home visiting, the relatives all show up there on a Friday night. She loves it! And she still quilts. She is 80 and still going strong. Ah, buttons. I have a huge jar on my shelf full. There was a tiny Korean lady who sold notions on a bridge outside the fabric market. It was so hot there in the summer and cold in the winter. I always stopped and bought something from her. Often, it was a scoop of buttons. I would go home and wash them--they were so dirty! But now I have tons and freely use them in my crafts. No need to hoard buttons! Michelle

That works for me. Tell the Air Force you are needed in Texas. DD # 1 lives in the southern part; I live in the northern part. I think Dania lives north eastern part. Tell them your advice is needed in the worst way. LOL It's a button issue........I need to see and run my fingers through those little gems. It's a matter of most importance. Guess that wouldn't be a good enough reason Maybe someday we'll get to meet........ Hugs & Prayers Cat

We were stationed in San Angelo waaaaay back in 1991 for 6 months. DH was in Intelligence school at Goodfellow AFB. There was a rattlesnake in the yard of the apartment complex--scared the heck out of me. I'm from Minnesota. Poisonous reptiles make this city girl want to hide in a dark closet! So you would have to promise me there would be no snakes. But then I'm in! Michelle

Sadly those little creatures are a fact of life here in Texas. The little town we live in still has allies with garbage dumpsters. I refuse to carry out the garbage in the summer if the grass is very long around the dumper because a neighbor lady seen a large snake crawl under ours 2 years ago. I've lived around snakes all my life but a little garden snake can still make me hurt myself. Mice/rats and snakes can make this over weight 58 yr old climb over and on top of stuff to get away. Something that seems to entertain DS and DH. So I can't promise there'd be no snakes.....but I could show you how to get a laugh out of your family. Cat

Ha. Believe me, my family knows that joke. I really, really hate snakes. Have ever since I was a little girl and would come across them in the grass. And there aren't any poisonous snakes in MN. Luckily, the kids know that any ACTUAL snakes are so off limits, they have never even tried to tease me with a fake snake. And I would NEVER take the trash out. N.E.V.E.R. E.V.E.R. E.V.E.R. E.V.E.R. Hey, I'm a city girl. I can volunteer in the art room in the morning, attend a squadron luncheon at noon and have cookies for the football team by 4 pm. But I don't do snakes. E.V.E.R. Michelle ;D

I'm not a big fan of "crawly critters", either...if it has more or less legs than I do (with the exception of cats and dogs, of course!), I don't want to deal with it...at all...never, ever...absolutely NEVER!!!! (My hand vacuum is known as the "insect cemetery", and fortunately it empties easily without my having to look at the contents...ick, ick, ICK!)

Cat Run first, ask questions later. Hey, if the dumpster was a good home 2 years ago, it's probably still a good place to live. For a reptile! There's no point looking for trouble. But I will squish a spider with my bare hand if I have to. I prefer a shoe, but would rather have it dead. I have a rule--no uninvited creatures in my house. Even the kids! (ha, this reminds me of last weekend at The Cape. DH's boss was visiting for the day. I was making dinner and heard him (DH) talking and assumed he was with the kids. I yelled out, "No one better come in here!" because I didn't have the foot bucket out to wash the sand off their feet. I came out with the bucket and the general looked so startled. Poor guy--I think I scared him off. I had to do some fast talking! Michelle

I'll have to ask DH if he said anything after they left. At least they didn't hang around long and make chit-chat. And I had the bucket ready when the kids came up!
Lots of errands today and packing tonight. We leave on Sunday for MN to see family. (Both DH and I grew up there.) We are going to a resort on the MN/Canadian border where we go every year. The kids esp love it. I tolerate it. I'm not much of an outdoorsy girl. But I can watch the kids swim from the deck of the lodge and sip a glass of wine. And the dog is welcome everywhere, even in the lodge. It's just so relaxed and carefree; we all love it there.

Cat, here is where you got me. I hate camping. With a passion. I think roughing it is a motel without room service. My poor parents tried hard. But I like my bed and my pillow and a bug free environment. Camping is so dirty and so much work. Yuck! Michelle
